Advantages: Huge Sport and Entertainment Venue Disadvantages: Busy
On our recent visit to NewYork one of the things on our' to do' list was a visit to MadisonSquareGardens. Whether you are a sports fan or not most people have heard of this great entertainment centre.
History
I fact there have been four MadisonSquareGardens ( MSG from now on).
The First Garden 1 (1879- 1890 )
Garden 1 was situated at MadisonSquare; 26th Street and Madison Avenue. It was a building without a roof and was named MSG by William Vanderbilt in 1879 and was used for horse shows, dog shows and circuses. Boxing events were also staged there.
Garden 2 ( 1890- 1925 )
Garden 2 was constructed on the same site as Garden 1 it was designed by Stanford White and contained an 8,000 seat main arena, a 1,500 seat concert hall, a 1,200 seat theatre plus the world's largest swimming pool. It was built in the Spanish ...
Advantages: not just sports, guided tour with knowledgable tour guides Disadvantages: brief
I have to admit that I wasn't expecting to enjoy our recent visit to MadisonSquareGarden. I thought that it was going to be a sports orientated afternoon and I am not a big sports fan. My husband is though, so I went along with him. It turns out that MadisonSquareGarden is not all about sport after all! We both ended up having a great afternoon.
The entrance fee was approx $15 per person and this included a guided tour of several areas of the venue. We had a helpful tour guide who was obviously well-trained and knew a great deal about the history of the venue. The tour included a visit to the rater expensive special guests area, to the theatre and concert hall, to the rink where many a concerta dn sporting occasion has taken place, to the changing rooms of the NewYork rangers (somewhere my husband didn't want to leave!) and to ...
Advantages: A lot to see & do, has something to offer for everyone Disadvantages: Too much to see and do, can be exhausting, expensive hotels
standing on the street outside Penn Station and MadisonSquareGarden and the first impression was I guess just like we had expected it to be: lots of yellow cabs, skyscrapers, big billboards etc. We got in the taxi line and we got a cab pretty fast. The ride over to Hotel Thirty Thirty only took five minutes and cost us about 5 dollars including tip
Getting around in the city - Subway
After we had unpacked some of our stuff we were ready to start taking a look at the city. The first thing we did was to go down to the subway station on 28th street and Park Avenue to buy a subway pass. For 21$ we got a one week unlimited travel pass (MetroCard) that we used quite a lot during our stay in the city. In fact, Manhattan was not as big as we thought it would be. So during our stay there we walked a lot and used the subway over longer distances ...
