So, what makes Hanauma Bay so special?
Well, the Bay is actually the crater of an ancient volcano which flooded when the exterior wall collapsed and the ocean rushed in. The bay is now the most perfect place for divers and snorkelers and as the water is so calm there it seems a wonderful place for beginners to start especially as there are lifeguards present.

It was my first trip and hopefully not my last to Hawaii last year. I visited two islands, the first of which was Oahu. The Hanauma Bay Nature Reserve is on the island of Oahu and after hearing plenty of stories about this place, including my husband's as he had been here before I was desparate to see the place.

There is an entrance fee to the bay but you don't actually have to pay this if you want to see the bay from the scenic lookout points dotted around the coastline. You only pay this if you actually want to go down onto the beach there and snorkel. I think the fee is around $5.00.

There is plenty of marine life at the bay and an extremely large coral reef which looks spectacular in photos. Because there is a live reef there visitors are reminded to take extra care not to stand on the coral as this can cause it damage and I believe that they allow a certain number of people on the beach at any one time in order that they can keep a check on what is happening with the way the bay is being treated. Strictly no pets are allowed.
The beach itself is sandy and is perfect for sunbathing. There are facilities available such as toilets, showers, phones, a gift shop and you can rent a locker to keep your belongings safe.
There is a paved walkway from the car park to the beach so it is accessible to those who are disabled.
If you do not own your own scuba diving kit you can also rent these when you get onto the beach, but I do not know how much the rental of these are.
All in all, a fab place to visit and take some breathtaking pictures. I really enjoyed my visit here and I hope on day I will be able to return.
Advantages: The water and the amount of sea life you can see is amazing. Disadvantages: It can get incredibly busy.
...in between those swims. Hanauma Bay is located in the island of Oahu and is a very short journey from Honolulu. We went by private vehicle (there is a parking fee) , but there are also various tour group excursions and buses which will take you there. On your first visit to the bay you have to watch a nine minute film, which explains the history of the bay and impresses on you the do's and don'ts when swimming in the bay. This really isn't long or ... ...take on the advice in order to protect this beautiful area. If you plan on making several trips back to the bay however, it is worth registering (you can do this at one of the information points down in the bay itself) so on your next visit you can avoid watching this film again. The bay is a very steep walk down from the entrance, but it is "walkable", up and down. If the walk isn't for you however, there is a bus (for an additional fee) which will ...

You could see all kinds of corals and all kinds of fish. It was so warm and you could swim out easily so far ...
