this city is right in the middle of northern germany and virtually unavoidable for anyone who wants to travel by train in germany. it is not that pretty having been bombed a lot during the war but it is really lively and has a youthful and exuberant atmosphere. it is full of students and at the moment (july 2000) they have the european exhibition there EXPO 2000. this is apparently a little below par but still warrants a visit. there are loads of pubs clubs and cafes to suit the younger generation and the huge wide open parks are great places to meet other students and chill out. it is not much to look at but a kicking place to be, live or study. take the bull by the horns and give it a go
