Hanover (English spelling) is an awesome twon. first of all you will not be able to avoid going to Hanover. if you go on a train anywhere in northern germany they all seem to go through there, but make sure you stop off and go beyond the recently rebuil;t train station. the town is not renowned for its beauty, but it is till not ugly. there are some beautiful parks and one lake next to the footbal ground which is breathtaking (unfortunately hitler designed it). there are excellent shopping facilities and because of the high student population the nightlife is great (paolo paolo being a great club). hanover is quite a young place and a bustling town (even more so with the Expo 2000 taking place there - of which i have heard mixed reports), but you can escape into the nearby harz, an hour up to bremen or down to hamlin and hildesheim, so there is plenty of chance to get away. hanover is superbly placed.
