Advantages: Still maintains a lot of its original character Disadvantages: very busy and chaotic traffic
...Hanoi is the capital city of Vietnam and is situated in the North of the country.
We did a tour of Vietnam from North to south summer 2007 with a company I found on the internet. www.selectiveasia.com and I dealt with a man called Nick who was extremely helpful all along the decision making and booking process.
I organized my own flights to Bangkok then from Bangkok to Hanoi with an Asian airline again on the internet www.airasia.com but there may be others, it is worth searching around.
We arrived late in Hanoi and we met by our guide Thuy (pronounced two ee) who was a delightful young man about 24 years old. His parents were teachers and had lived through the Vietnam War, Thuy was too young to remember, he said. It was great to have a guide just for us as we were able to ask all kinds of quite personal questions which Thuy...

Advantages: It's a peaceful city with many beautiful sceneries Disadvantages: there are not so many places for entertaining
...Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam (in the Southest Asia). It is located in the north of the country and has the population of more than 3 million people. Hanoi is almost 1000 years old (995 years old actually). The city is beautiful and people here are very friendly.
+++ THE WEATHER +++
- Hanoi has 4 different seasons: autumn, spring, summer and winter (unlike Ho Chi Minh city: only dry and rainy season). However, I think the most beautiful time of the year is in the autumn. Everything is so nice: streets are filled with leaves; the smell of milk flowers follows as you walk down some streets, the weather is cool - with gently sunshine ... It's just the best time of the year.
- Because the Vietnamese celebrate the Lunar New Year (same as China, Korea and Japan) - they call it "Tet" - so it'd be great if you come to Vietnam...

Advantages: Very beautiful Disadvantages: Can be busy
...Hoan Kiem lake is at the centre of Hanoi and a focus point of the city. It is easy to get to and doesn't cost a penny to visit. The lake isn't too large and doesn't take too long to walk around. The lake is central to the locals as well as the tourists in Hanoi. If you visit early in the morning while it is still cool you will be able to watch the locals do Tai Chi. Badminton courts are painted onto the ground all around the lake and sometimes you will see the locals playing this too. The lake is a great place to meet people and see local life. It can be busy at times but this is due to the fact that the locals love and use this lake as much as the tourists. There are loads of shops and coffee bars around and it's great to spend the afternoon people watching....

Axl Rose once admitted that the only reason that Guns n' Roses became successful was because of the void in the market that had been left empty by the demise of Hanoi Rocks. There may be other reasons for the formers success but it is easy to see Hanoi... more
8 of us stayed at the Capital Hill Hotel+Suites in Sept 2006.
If location is what you want, then this is a winner-the hotel is as centrally located as you are going to get, plus the bus from the Train Station stops outside. A few minutes walk south... more
