...In the ast the Kathmandu Valley consisted of three kingdoms: Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur. Only the king of Nepal from the Kathmandu dynasty still exists. He lived in the new Royal Palace, you can’t visit.
The places of the old king palaces, which are surrounded from Buddhist and Hindu temples, are called "Durbar Square". Patan today is a part of the town Kathmandu just across the river. Bhaktapur is 20 km far from Kathmandu.
Highlights are beside the Durbar Squares of Patan and Kathmandu the Buddhist Stupas of Swayambuhunath (Monkey Temple) and Bodnath (Bhouda - little Tibet).
But the most interesting sight is Pashupatinath, the most important Hindu temple, which is mainly devoted to Shiva, where you can watch the funerals and cremations at the riverside all the day.

If you book an organized trip from Europe, you could be sure that all goes well. You may have more fun in a group, than travelling alone, but you have to pay more than twice. You learn more of the way things happen in Nepal, if you have to organize your trip for yourself, but in a package tour you have a guide who could explain a lot of things you wouldn't hear, if you go alone.
If you book an organized tour in Kathmandu, you cant be sure that you have a serious company. It's possible that the guide has to ask the local people for the way. I booked a sight seeing tour in Kathmandu and was disappointed. The tour started at eleven, they skipped important sights (Boudha) and there was only half an hour to visit Pagan Square or Swayambuh. The guide takes the money for the admission fee, but smuggled me without ticket (which was valid for one week...

Advantages: food ok Disadvantages: delay and wrong promisses
...I was travelling from Kathmandu to New Delhi on Jet Airways. I had booked economy class. The Indian food in the plane was quite good. However, I could not enjoy it at all because it was a very exhausting task for me getting on the plane. The flight was delayed and I had to stay an extra night in Kathmandu. At the hotel in Kathmandu I was left unclear about my further travelling for a long time, and I had to endure many discussions. The Jet Airways staff was always friendly and seemingly obliging but without making pressure nothing at all happened. Another problem was that the Jet Airways manager responsible for Delhi was in Bangkok and his cellphone turned off. After this experience I can not recommend travelling with Jet Airways....

Myself and partner stayed at this hotel during a visit in febuary 06, the hotel is very easy to find upon arrival and we were checked in quickly by hotel staff and shown to our room. The room whilst very basic was clean and tidy, suitable to our needs.... more
