Travelled June/July 2004.

Best holiday in years. Beautiful setting with a bay and a ruined castle, wonderful freindly locals, enough choice of tavernas and bars without being too busy. Probably a near 50-50 mix of Greek holidaymakers and Brits (with a smattering of other nationalities). The accomodation is mostly studios of varying quality we were booked into a bit of a dump but moved on to a super air-conditioned place with a fantastic view to wake up to every day. I would say it's more of a 40's/50's place or for families looking to chill with not much to keep the 18-30 lot busy.

Our accommodation was booked for the Angela studios which have 7 studio rooms, 2 of which have no natural light and look out on to a corridor. We (3 adults) were put in one of these where the room light needed to be on permanently and there was no ventilation. We moved! We relocated to the Haraki Village Studios and that was that! Super room with a view across the bay, air conditioning, clean, spacious- our holiday started there and then!

At the top of the hill behind is ruined Ferakolos Castle and beyond that, a 25 minute walk, is a beautiful golden beach for sun worshippers. Haraki bay itself is a pleasant shingle and sand beach with great snorkeling, sunbeds available and a gentle promemade walk. Around the bay there are about 10 restaurants and a sprinkling of bars. My favourites were Cocktails and Dreams, fantastic hosts, cheap booze, sports channels on tv, web access and a pool table- oh and free fresh popcorn! Our favourite restaurants were Da Vincis and Haraki Bay Hotel restaurant. For breakfast and snacks (evening meals too) Kostas & Elenas was hard to beat. Breakfast was 4.50 Euros inc fry up, toast, juice, coffee and an apricot half- that sets you up! Evening meals (for 3) 20-35 Euros including some drinks and a pint of Mythos at Cocktails & Dreams 1.5 Euro’s!

Getting out and about was a tad tricky with only 1 bus per day from the square to Lindos and Rhodes town. More frequent busses were on the main Rhodes Town to Lindos road but that’s a bit of a hike! Taxis are called from Lindos but be aware that they charge an extra 5 Euros to collect you. My tip would be hire a car. We got an air-conditioned Corsa from Simon at Haraki Cars for 25 Euros a day for a week. We loved Rhodes Town and Lindos, Monolithos (castle on a rock) and Epta Piages (crystal springs). 2 country villages of note are Lardos (by the way go to the Ooopa! Taverna there one night- by far the best meal all holiday and Greek dancing too) and Empiros. Butterflies and the other recommended spots were pretty good too, but if you dislike Blackpool type holidays avoid Falaraki and Pefkas.

Anyway here’s looking forward to next time!
