Harrison's caves are in the parish of St. Thomas they are quite difficult to find due to the fact that in Barbados they feel it is only necessary to put up a sign post every so often. Meaning that you will have come to several turn offs and junctions and not have a clue which way to go, its pot luck really!!! An island map is essential in this country!
But as for the caves when you get there, they are fantastic, they are truly beautiful. The tours are well organised and regular. The tour guides are well informed and the whole experience was delightful and a must for families.
You really won't believe your eyes when you see the stalactites, stalagmites, streams, lakes and underground waterfalls, its like being in an enchanted fairy tale world. As your looking at the amazing wonders before your eyes it is difficult to believe that it is all real. My children felt like they were in a magical wonderland!
The whole journey starts by watching an informative video on the history of the caves, where you learn that they were discovered in about 1795 and then officially opened to the public in 1981. You are then taken onboard a tram which takes a tour of the caves, this is taken at a fairly relaxed pace.
One of the nicest things is that they do stop upon two or three occasions to allow you to get out of the tram, in order for you to see the structures close to and to allow you to photograph them. This is particularly lovely when they let you see the underground stream and they light it all up, it is a sight to behold!
They are a unique natural feature, with one of the largest structures of geophysical structures I have ever seen. This is a must for those visiting Barbados and is one of its number one attractions. Normally it is all in darkness when no one is visiting the caves and I felt that they were allowing me to see what goes on beneath the earth, in that secret world we just don't see!
It had plenty of parking. The only problems were that the gift shop could have been so much better, it is very small, with very little in it and nothing that couldn't be found else where on the island. And it was expensive, it would have been better if they had some postcards or brochures on the caves for sale. Apart from all that it was fantastic and they also allow you to take your own photographs. A little bit steep on price but well worth it.
