Advantages: fun and informative Disadvantages: some might think touristy
...Hartley’s Creek Crocodile Farm is forty km from Cairns on the beautiful coastal road to Port Douglas. The Crocodile Show (although some might think it a bit touristy) was nevertheless informative and entertaining. We saw the crocodile head shake and the death roll and learned a lot about these prehistoric monsters. It made me think twice about swimming in the sea having heard some of the tales from Steve the keeper. Apart from the crocodiles the kids were happy to stroke the koalas, dingoes and kangaroos. They were fascinated by the talk given by the reptile keeper and we learned what to do in case of a snake bite. A fun and informative time was had by all....

Advantages: Variety of activities, accomodation and sights. Disadvantages: Not being able to swim during box jelly fish season.
...and an Aboriginal culture show along with plenty of local craft shops.
For the more adventurous there is Bunji Jumping, and Scuba Diving for the accomplished and the beginner. There is also the chance to go on a four wheel drive expedition to the top end of Queensland, Cape York and Bamaga; only accessable by four wheel drive.
I would say a trip to Cairns would be enjoyed by all ages.
You would be able to swim up there all year round although if swimming in the sea, box jelly fish are abundant over the summer months of November to about April. These jelly fish can be fatal. All beaches have first aid boards situated along them. These contain vinigar which is an antidote to the sting. Also esturine crocodiles have been known to come as far south as Cairns. During the summer months there is a risk of cyclones.

Advantages: Handy to cairns town centre. Disadvantages: over priced
...Rainforest Dome is worth visting if you require a short distraction from the Casino that sits beneath the Dome! It has a large collection of native bird life that the customer can interact with as the birds are free to fly around the dome. The staff are very knowledgeable and put on very informative shows about some Australain widlife, particularly bird species.
The Dome is home to an enourmous crocodile however it seems that this display is wasted in the small space that they have at their disposal.
If you are looking for something to do in Cairns on a wet day then the DOme is worth a visit, however i would not recommend that anyone go out of their way in order to see wildlife that is adubant in other nature reserves around the country which have much large displays and offer better value for money.
