Marijuana plants are not an everyday sight. But here in the city centre they are reaching up to the light, dark green, tall and bushy, swaying in a breeze, heavy with flowers and seeds and scenting the air with their distinctive fragrance.
Of course, Amsterdam is not an everyday place. This civilised and sophisticated city claims the world's first marijuana museum. The Hash Marihuana Hemp Museum is a few minutes stroll from Dam Square in the heart of the city on a canal side at the edge of the red-light area. Taking up the ground floor of one tall narrow Dutch house is this museum dedicated to a plant which has been demonised and made illegal in recent times.
Yet through their exhibits they show the important part this plant has played in human history over thousands of years. Marijuana fibres make strong ropes and durable textiles, sails and fabrics. The original US Constitution was written on paper made from it. It's leaves and seeds have been used for medicine throughout recorded history, from Emperor Shen in 2737BC to Queen Victoria's doctor who prescribing marijuana for her illnesses. It has a religious dimension with Rastafarian's claiming it is described in the Bible as a holy plant.
The museum shows ancient smoking implements and modern smugglers hiding places. It has samples of products made from marijuana and a wealth of artifacts, pictures and documents describing the commonplace history of this plant, now outlawed mostly everywhere. There is an emphasis on American history, in part because of the large number of American visitors and also because of the pressure the US has exerted on nations such as The Netherlands in making and keeping marijuana illegal.
A highlight is the growing room where rows of marijuana plants of different varieties grow in pots under bright lights and fans which wafts the scent of the plants through the air. A video shows tasks involved in successfully growing the plant, but they are quick to add they are not inciting anyone to illegal acts. However you can buy seeds at the museum. Should you want to smoke marijuana they'll point you to one of the nearby 'smoking cafes'.
Souvenirs include related books, t-shirts, and badges as well as packets of seeds.
I have no personal interest in taking recreation drugs; my relaxant of choice is wine. But I found this is a fascinating and thought provoking place to spend an hour. The convincing evidence shown here makes me question why marijuana was made illegal and why America is its prime prosecutor. After handling samples of hemp clothes there I wondered if the combined lobby of American cotton and tobacco growers instigated the campaign, as this wonder plant is competition for them.
If you want to know more about the history and uses of this plant that so often features in news stories, this museum should be on your intinery next time you visit Amsterdam.

...cartels have managed to smuggle Hash through countries where it is illegal. Some which I thought were the best were shoes which had a removable sole so quantities of drugs could be hidden in the heel and sole while the smuggles walked through customs.
One of the most interesting parts of the museum is a live indoor marihuana garden where you can view actual marihuana plants being cultivated. And as if all that isn’t enough when we were there ... ...than being interested in the product. The shop has a souvenir section with T-shirts, seeds, and books relating to marihuana and badges.

Whoever you are, what ever you look for in a city, you should check out Amsterdam. Amsterdam is great, so much to do. I lived there for five years, and was never short of something to do.
Some people think Amsterdam is just all drugs and sex, ok it has all that, but there is much more.
There are many Museums to see, from the Van Gogh Museum to the Anne Frankhuis and even a HashMarihuanaHempMuseum.
If you are not into that check out the city from the water, find someone with a boat, or hop on one of the boat tours around Amsterdam. All the old houses are built so that their fronts face the water. Also if you get a chance visit the famous city park. You will love it, it is so full of life.
There are so many old flea markets around the city, offering everything from food, clothing to candles.

Advantages: Short way from home, a small city with a big city feel, museums Disadvantages: It is a bit too small to match cities like Paris and London
book these paintings were covered up with blue paint a long time ago and when they found out about this in the 60s they had to do a lot of work to restore it back to the original look.
Scheepvaart Museum: The maritime museum has lots and lots of models of ships and it takes you through the history from sail ships to steamboats and so on. There were also displays about the world wars. There is a full size sail boat on the harbour of the museum called the Amsterdam and it was fascinating to get on board this ship.
The HashMarihuanaHempMuseum: The ?museum? was a real disappointment. According to the guide book it was a thing that we had to see. OK, so the subject is controversial but the displays of pipes to smoke hash in, things to make out of hemp and the green room filled with hash plants does not change that fact that the museum ...
