Advantages: cheap electrical appliance, near Malaysia Disadvantages: far away from Bangkok and nothing else to do apart from shopping.
I actually live in Songkhla. Hat Yai is just 30 min drive from my home. This place is known by everybody in Thailand that it's the best place to buy cheap electrical appliance.

Be warned as during term time (June-November and January - March), there are many students and bars and karaoke can be crowded.

I actually live in Songkhla. Hat Yai is just 30 min drive from my home. This place is known by everybody in Thailand that it's the best place to buy cheap electrical appliance. The shopping area is on three roads that are parallel to each other called Nipatutit 1,2,3. There are every thing from vendors to big department stores, hotels and restaurants are all around that area and this makes thing easy to wander around. There are two famous place for shopping called Kim Yong Market and Pang Thong. At Kim Yong Market, on the ground floor, you can find a variety of goods from cloths to chinese mushroom. On the first floor, it's the place for electrical appliance. The voltage used in Thailand is the same as here. We use two leged plugs there but you can buy adapter at department store called Central with the price around 3 pounds. I bought casio graphical calculator here which was 20 pounds cheaper than here. The big problem here for foriegner is sometimes there are fake stuff and they always quote higher price to foreingners. The tip is ask for bargain and look around many shops before you decide to buy. Most local people have their regular shops and I'm sure if you ask someone (look for middle age women)there, they will be pleased to show you. At Pangthong, there are more goods like stereo, walkman, camera and cosmetics. It's not point to buy perfume there as I compared before that the price is only slightly less than perfume at duty free. There are some good sea food restaurant around the shopping area, it is expensive but maybe not expensive for people from England as the cost of living is different. But if you want to have good, cheap seafood with good scenery, either go to Songkhla(city district) which is around 45 min drive or better choice is Koh Yo (Yo island). Koh Yo is a small island connected to mainland by the Tinnasulanond Bridge which is the logest bridge in Thailand. There are many restaurants around the island. They are easy to find as most are on main road and all are considered quite good. Porntip is the one I always go :) People who likes sea sport i.e. jetski, you can play this at Songkhla however I won't recomend it. In Hat Yai it seems people never sleep and nightlife is quite good. Karaoke and bars are cheap. Be warned as during term time (June-November and January - March), there are many students and bars and karaoke can be crowded. If you are going to Malaysia, you may considered Hat Yai as a good stop. If you are going to Bangkok, and wanna come here just for shopping especially if you are not interested in buying cheap electrical appliance, I don't recommend it. It is too far from Bangkok and there are many department stores in Bangkok which sell goods at similar or even cheaper price.
Advantages: shopping is cheap Disadvantages: dusty
Hat Yai as a holiday destination, has very little to interest the adventurous tourist or culture seeker. It is really nothing more than a shopper's haven. At least Malaysian shoppers anyway, who come in droves at the weekends and public holidays, crossing the border from the northern Malaysian state of Kedah through the customs checkpoint at Bukit Kayu Hitam. The drive from the border to the centre of Hat Yai takes approximately 45 minutes, and the ... ...to stay at whilst in Hat Yai is the Central Sukhonta Hotel, located right next to the Central department store and handy for shoppers. Room rates are very reasonable at 30 pounds a night.
Aside from shopping, once in Hat Yai, your stay would not be complete without a meal or two at a seafood restaurant. There is an excellent open-air restaurant 5 minutes away from the Sukhonta Hotel, which serves the best seafood I have had in a while. On the night ...
