The Hauptbahnhof Central station is one of the busiest places in Stuttgart but it also remains one of Stuttgart's best kept secrets. As well as the bustling station below, it is possible to climb the tower, topped with the world famous Mercedes star, and look out over the city centre of Stuttgart.
Although nowhere near as high as the TV tower outside the city, the station tower gives you a much more intimate view of Stuttgart allowing views of the main high street (KonigStrasse), the old and new castles in Schlossplatz, the planetarium, the opera house as well as the train lines coming into the station below you.
For those feeling unfit there is a lift to the level directly below the observation platform that unfortunately closes if there is high winds but there are also displays on several floors up the tower.
The other floors are also well worth a visit with interactive displays outlining the Stuttgart21 project (www.stuttgart21.de (unfortunately only in German)) by which they hope to completely renovate the station and surrounding area to improve transport links (at the moment trains have to come in, stop, then go out the way they came) by rotating the platforms through 90° and also building new areas around the station.
The tower is completely free to enter and the viewing platform is open daily from 10:00-18:00 (weather permitting) with the displays remaining open until 21:00. It is a great place to visit and was quiet both times I visited.
