One down many more to go

Advantages: Vibrant and exciting
Disadvantages: Pollution

...the time warp that is Havana and this was our first port of call when we landed. We stayed at the Hotel Nacional De Cuba which I have already reviewed so I will spare you the details however even if you are not staying there it is well worth a visit as there is plenty to see with a fine history, not sure yet whether my own picture is up there alongside all the other famous visitors like Ali, Sinatra and Colin Farrell but it is just a matter of time ...
...this) suite.

Havana is a vibrant city that exudes energy and excitement, visually it fluctuates between bright stucco buildings, secluded little squares and large imposing buildings to looking like a war torn bomb site here the national speciality is scaffolding and home improvements. It is fair to say that many of the buildings in Havana have seen better days and particularly in the old part of town a lot of work appears to be in ... more

The Jewel in Havana's Crown

Advantages: An excellent introduction to Havana's charms
Disadvantages: None to note (despite the 'socks')

Back in 2004 I was lucky enough to celebrate the New Year in Havana the capital city of Cuba and vowed if ever I were to return I would spend a few days staying with the lady that is proclaimed to be 'The Jewel of Havana' better known as the Hotel Nacional De Cuba. Needless to say during that first trip I fell in love with the people, the music and the overwhelming ambience of the country and of course Che Guevara (all over again). The Journey?. During my post Christmas blues this year I booked a return trip. We spend a relaxing day in the NH Crystal Resort in the Cayo's and enjoy a few Mojito's before joining the transfer coach which will take us on the 30 minute journey to Jardines Del Rey Airport and after a smooth check in we board our ATR42 Cubanacan flight (which needless to say is an experience in itself if you know your ...

Havana ball in Cuba!

Advantages: Loads to see and do, great people
Disadvantages: Many hustlers, can become tiring

Havana, capital of Cuba and the largest city oin the Carribean, is a city of stark but pleasing contrasts. It is probably best known for its historic quarter which was designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO in the early 1990s. As beautiful and impressive as "Vieja Habana" is, this is just one aspect of this bustling and energetic city. Havana comprises three main and very distinct areas - Habana Vieja (Old Havana), Centro and Vedado. Using public transport it is possible to move between these areas quickly if your time in the city is limited, but it is far better to devote separate days to each area since Havana's main sites of interest are scattered throughout the city. To begin to navigate Havana's streets you MUST have a street map. The streets of Havana (in all three districts) follow a grid system. In part of Centro ...

Havana good night at the Brixtonian

Advantages: Free entry at the weekend and killer cocktails
Disadvantages: Cover charge during the week for special events

My fellow Brixtonites will probably hate me for giving away one of Brixton’s best kept secrets, but I think the rest of Britain should know all about the Brixtonian. The Brixtonian Havana Bar is hidden down an alleyway cutely named Beehive Place, near the Brixton Recreation Centre. The decor is based on a classic Havana bar - the high wood-lined ceiling and fans keep the air and the ambience cool and relaxed. The furniture and bar area are sleek and modern, wavey sofas line the room, which is split into two early in the evening. One section acts mainly as a restaurant but the whole place becomes a giant party playground after dark. As many locals know, trying to get into a Brixton bar after about 11pm on a Friday or Saturday night usually involved a hefty cover charge. But the Brixtonian is free at the weekends, open until 2am ...
