I remember when I was at school and nobody ever wanted to say they we're going on a Butlins or Haven Holiday. I myself have never thought of Haven as something special. I've seen the adverts on TV and in the paper and just thought it was a place people with low incomes go for a week in the summer. How wrong was I!

This summer myself, my girlfriend and her family went to Haven, Seaview, which is in Weymouth.

Part 1 - Setting Up Camp

So everyone arrived at the camp site after a three hour car ride from Portsmouth. We al jumped out of the car and into the car park. Haven has a main car park where you can park while visiting the site or getting ready to collect your passes ect.

A bunch of us went in search of the office where you check in. Be sure to bring your letter from Haven to show you've paid, e.g. a website printout or letter via post. We started to look around the camp for this check in office. After five or ten minutes walking around we headed back to the car park. We all laughed when we found the office was in fact a shed right next to the car park. It would be better if the shed had an improved sign.

We handed the nice lady our letters, we have two tent pitches by the way, and she told us our pitch numbers, handed us passes and documents to put on our tent so staff know we've paid and when we need to leave by.

We all started setting up the tents and we're finished in no time at all.. yeah right (oppps take that last bit off lol).

Part 2 - Pitch & Price

The pitch itself was large, you can put the biggest of tents on them and still have room. We had a huge tent, 8 man tent, huge area in the middle you know the kind, and still had room for the car, windbreakers and lots of chairs. The best thing about the pitch other then the price, just £70 a pitch for a week!, was the fact that the park was right next to us.

The kids couldn't wait to get into the park and the fence didn't help. The kids had no problem in climbing through it! In the coming week the location of the park did become a bit of a headache as the kids would run into the park whenever someone turned the other way.

Water taps are located every ten metres or so as are bins. I problem I did see with a few of the pitches is the bins location. Two or three unlucky people got put right next to the big bins, which everyone dumped their rubbish at. The bins smelt a lot and what was even worse then the smell is the fact that the bin man came at 7am and woke us all up! Avoid the pitches near the bins if you can...

Part 3 - Let's Have Fun Before Lunch

A problem I think a lot of people have on holiday is finding things to do before lunch. Yes you can pack a lunch and go to the beach but if you want to stay around camp then that's not an option. Haven, Seaview has two pools. The outdoor pool is small in size but does have a water slide and a baby pool, even if it is small. Adults can laze around the pool on the chairs and watch the kids. Lifeguards keep an eye on the kids so you don't have to hehe :)

If the sun, or rain come to think of it, is too much for you, head inside and swim in the much larger indoor pool. The poor is a lot warmer and also has a lifeguard. There is also a small pool for babies, which goes up to knee height. Note that only arm bands and beach balls can be used in all pools. Beach Balls only when the pool isn't too busy. Once again there are chairs around the pool area if mums and dads want to watch.

The park has a huge arcade, which has slot machines, games and much more. We had great fun winning tickets for the kids and ourselves. We then exchanged them for some fun prizes, e.g. a bear and some bracelets. The arcades cost a lot of money, a standard machine costs about 50p a play. However, if you just want fun with the kids 2p and 10p slot machines can be found all over.

We didn't get around to having a game of air hockey or bowling but these games can be found in the arcade also. Oh by the way.. cough cough.. I won a big toy in them machines where the arm comes down :) Cost me like £10 to win it.. but I won it in the end :)

Make your way into the reception area and pickup some booklets for fun days out. There's lots to see and do but lots of money is needed to. If you don't have much money to spend, simply check the information board each day for shows in the main club. Kids can visit the club for shows, which feature the Haven fun club characters or take part in fun and games with the Haven Fun Stars. Fun Stars being the people employed to entertain the kids while you have a drunk on a night.

Part 4 - Yummy, Yummy, Yummy I've got chips in my tummy!

Well I never! Chips on a seaside holiday. If you have five minutes to spare then visit the family restaurant for a drink or to have a meal. I thought the menu was a bit limited but I guess it depends on the person. Meals include fish and chips with peas, fisherman's pie, roast dinner, children's mix and match menu and lots of salads, potatoes and other lovely food.

The food was yummy but it was the little things that let it down. Like my burger only had cheese on one layer instead of the two it does on the menu picture. It was little things like that. Also the prices... OMG the prices! If you want to save money your better off going to the local pub! Fish and Chips plus some peas? About £6/£7! Want a coke with that sir? Add another £1.30ish. You will find a meal for the average eatter costs about £7 or £8. The kids menu is good value for money and costs about £2.50 but does come with a "Free" drink. If you have bags full of cash then come eat here.. Otherwise visit the beach cafes or go to a local pub.

Overall the service was good, the food was good and the prices ok. Oh I have to mention the non-stop music, which includes really bad songs like the Spice Girls and Star Trekking! After a week it gets on your... well you know :)

Part 5 - We're Having Fun At The Tiger Club!

The best bit of the holiday was the night life! Well I say night life I mean the Haven club. The club is a very large room, I think it seats about 200 to 400 people, which has bars around the outside. The adults can collect drinks from the bars while the kids can buy icecream, popcorn, drinks, chips, chickens, wedges and lots of other fantastic goodies from their own little food outlets.

The food is good.. really good in fact.. The ice creams are to die for and the ice drinks are wicked. However, yet again the prices.. oh the prices :( I know they make their money from the food and drink but £2 for some candyfloss and like £1.25 for a small..really small ice cream. If you want to save some money there is an answer!

Listen up parents for my top tips for saving money on food and drink..

5. Purchase one of the large plastic drink containers. They cost £3.50 but they're huge.. they look great and come in red, pink or blue. You can have them filled with Coke and a few other drinks such as Tango. But this is the best bit! Bring them back for a refill, either that night or another day it doesn't matter there yours for life! hehe, and you get a refill for about £1.50 I think it is.

4. Prices have been fixed across the park. You won't be able to get coke cheaper by going from one food outlet to the other. Buy a bottle of coke from the coke machine outside the club for £1.

3. Buy a bottle of coke or even better take lots with you on holiday. Purchase the large drink containers for £3.50 then refill them with coke before you go over the club and take them with you.. £££££££'ss saved!

2. Ask for a cup of water at the food outlets or the bar. They're free and taste great.. hmmm yummy :)

1. But the number one tip is... share! You know what its like parents.. One kid wants something they all want it. Make them share or ask for the food to be split onto two plates. The portions are big so the kids are more then likely not to finish their own.

Part 5.5 - The Show Starts

Ok so you've got your drinks, food and you've sat down in the club. It's time to bring out the Tiger Club Characters and Fun Stars!

The Fun Stars work at Haven. They will take care of your children in the club on a night. However, this doesn't mean they will stop them running off! It's your job to make sure they don't run out the room or walk off. The Fun Stars will dance with them, play games and lots more.

Each night the Fun Stars sing a song. By the end of the holiday everyone knows it and you can even buy a CD at the gift shop for the ride home... The Song, we're having fun at the Tiger Club, has great hand actions and is a fantastic song. The kids love it and so do some of the adults.. cough cough :)

It's then time to bring one of the Tiger Club characters out. There's Rory the tiger, an elephant, a bear and a wizard.. sorry I've forgot the names and a few others but you get the idea. The character, e.g. Rory, comes out, dances with the Fun Stars and gets his picture taken with the kids. Haven does have someone to take pictures, which can be purchased at the gift shop. They start at about £6.50 just for the picture and sky rocket if you want it in a key ring or picture frame. But hey.. its worth it mums and dads :)

By the 4th or 5th night.. you really can't buy any more pictures :)

Part 6 - Mums and Dads.. Let's Party

By about 8.30pm the kids have burnt off some energy and its time for Bingo! You can buy Bingo tickets for £2 each at the bar. You win a big toy from the gift shop or a small toy from the gift shop if you get a full house or a row. The prizes seemed to get worse as the week went on. If your there for 7 or more days just buy the toy instead of wasting your money every night on bingo :) Unless your a huge bingo lover :)

There's then time for some dancing with the kids and adults, if they want to join in with the kids. Each night there's a different event. It might be a dancer, a little show or something. They're good fun but you get what you pay for (The pitch or Caravan).

Let me point out at this point that you need a fun pass to enter the club. These come free of charge when you book with Haven directly. You get given these when you check in. You will need to bring them to the club each night to get in. Don't do what I did and leave it in your pocket while swimming.. oppps... If you rent your friends caravan you will need to purchase a fun pass from reception.

Part 7 - It's Getting Late..

The bar opens to about 2am.. It really depends on the bar staff, how many people are still in the club ect.. If you want to go to bed early you might get a surprise. The music from the club can be heard all over the park.. so you 10pm sleepers.. think again!

Part 8 - The Three W's - Wash, Wee & Welcoming

The whole Haven site only has one set of toilets and showers! However, there's are used mainly by the tent users so don't panic too much. There's five or six showers and toilets and wash areas.

Men and Female toilets are separate. The showers can get a little dirty at times, its all that sand, so its best to use the shower at the other end to the drain so you don't get everyone else's waste coming your way.. including wee sometimes.. :(

The toilets and showers are busy around 9am but apart from that you shouldn't have a problem getting a shower or a loo seat :)

Part 9 - Cleaners on strike

We did run into a little problem with the cleaner. The site had one cleaner, a very nice chap, who's job it was to clean the toilets and showers.. oh by the way there is another set of toilets in the main club for on a night or in meal times..

The cleaner was given the sack a few days into our holiday. He was seen making jokes to people which some might have taken the wrong way.. anyway.. The showers and toilets were not cleaned for a day or two and it took a whole line of people at reception before the reception staff come and cleaned them their selves.

This wasn't the end of the problem. The next day a new cleaner started. She thought it was better to clean the toilet mirror rather then refill the empty toilet roll holders...

Part 10 - Other Stuff

The site has a shop, which charges a lot but you can get your milk, paper and other bits and bobs such as sun glasses. Its open every day from about 7/8am.

You can wash and iron your clothes at the laundry, once again it costs money.. hehe :)

You have to leave the site by 11am on the day your due to leave.

Cash Machine on site in the arcade, there is a charge but all the shops and outlets take card payments including Solo.

The gift shop is open every night. You can buy photos of the kids, key rings, soft toys and other fun stuff. It's worth a look just remember to bring lots of money.

You can buy a lovely breakfast from 9am onwards, I think 8am or sooner would be a little better but hey. Toast, eggs, beans, bacon and lots of other goodies for under £4 for the lot. Fresh orange juice, tea, coffee and cornflakes are also on offer.

Part 11 - The Area

I'm not going to say too much about the area because I'm reviewing Haven. The beach is about a 20 minute walk away. Simply follow the signs, use your free Haven Site Map to find the beach path, to the beach. Watch out for horse poo along the way and bring water for the kids as it can get a little hot. There is a small fairground and cafes ect.. You will need to walk, drive or get the bus to the main Weymouth beach if you want more.

Part 12 - The Final Word

Haven holidays are great! It doesn't cost too much too pitch a tent... There's lots of stuff for the kids to do, e.g. swimming, the club, arcades or the park. You will however need a lot of money for food, drinks and gifts. Unless you bring a lot of food and drink with you to make meals.. Your gonna be spending big bucks :) The area around Seaview is lovely and well worth a visit.

Overall Score - 8/10
