Unfortunately Haw-Par Villa is awkward to reach by public transport, but as the entry is free it justifies the (only slight) expense of getting a taxi. It may also be best to bring a picnic as the cafeteria doesn't seem to be reliably open and there are few shops or restaurants nearby. ... Read review

Advantages: Free interesting entertaining, excellent photo opportunities Disadvantages: A bit confusing, run down, difficult to reach by public transport
Don't be surprised if despite having been to singapore several times you have not heard of this magical place. It is the remains of a theme park based on ancient mythology set in the Tiger Balm Gardens. The villa itself was built by the creator of Tiger Balm, but is unfortunately no longer standing. The attraction consists of a startling array of painted cast concrete statues and tableau depicting scenes from chinese mythology, and a bizzare selection ... ...guide book before you start to help reduce confusion if you are not a student of chinese culture and mythology. I would rate this as the single best attraction in Singapore.
Outstanding is the "Ten Courts of Hell" which are entered by going into an enormous dragon's mouth. Although in the park's Heyday these were viewed from a boat ride a walk through allows the best opportunity to view the full details of the scenes showing the ... more
Don't be surprised if despite having been to singapore several times you have not heard of this magical place. It is the remains of a theme park based on ancient mythology set in the Tiger Balm Gardens. The villa itself was built by the creator of Tiger Balm, but is unfortunately no longer standing. The attraction consists of a startling array of painted cast concrete statues and tableau depicting scenes from chinese mythology, and a bizzare selection of oversized animals. I would recommend buying a guide book before you start to help reduce confusion if you are not a student of chinese culture and mythology. I would rate this as the single best attraction in Singapore. Outstanding is the "Ten Courts of Hell" which are entered by going into an enormous dragon's mouth. Although in the park's Heyday these were viewed from a boat ride a walk through allows the best opportunity to view the full details of the scenes showing the specific punishments for each type of sin, and for the faint-hearted to make a rapid exit if necessary. Plan to spend at least 4 hours here, you'll not regret it.
Advantages: Very clean environment. Efficient.Good shopping. Disadvantages: High degree of social control.
.
Singapore is a good place to eat out. There are numerous Western,Japanese,Thai,Chinese,Malay,Indian and American style restaurants and for local hawker food, try the stalls at Newton Circus.
I would recommend a visit to the island of Sentosa,a good place for a fun day out,a visit to the botanical gardens is a pleasant excursion, and if you enjoy horse racing make a beeline for the Bukit Timah race course. For something unusual the figures of Chinese mythology at the HawParVillas may interest you. There are several theme parks on the Island ,including the Ming Village,if they are your "cup of tea."
Singapore may be small but it certainly is a "Mighty Midget" as a trip to this Island Republic at the heart of South east Asia would soon demonstrate. Do check it out ! ...

Advantages: People, food, shopping, the price. Disadvantages: Pushy shop owners.
the buses don't announce the stops. For the zoo this was fine because the bus takes you right up to the entrance. Going to HawParVilla in southern Singapore was trickier because you have to know and be able to see the stop name to get off. Luckily I was sat next to a lovely lady who saw me fretting and told me exactly when I should get off. I should probably add that I NEVER use buses in the UK, I always drive instead so this probably had something to do with my lack of understanding of buses.
Basically, public transport in Singapore is clean, punctual, efficient, cheap and easy to use. MRT stations are everywhere so you can't really get lost.
**Hotels**
I stayed at the Madras Hotel in Little India for the two weeks I spent in Singapore. It's difficult to give a good description of hotels because they vary so much. A dorm bed in ...
