Finding myself with a mid morning flight departure of 10am from San Francisco Airport meant I had to find accommodation close to the airport for our final night. Like most people, I don't particularly relish spending a night in an Airport hotel, as it seems to be far more a functional expenditure than it adding anything to the holiday. This tree is often discounted in gardens because it is so commonly seen growing along roads and hedgerows. It does however have a lot of advantages. In the spring it produces beautiful, sweet smelling blossom in either white or pale pink, followed by berries which the birds love.
It is also a marvellous burglar deterrent once established. Its prickly stems would put off even the most determined criminal and I certainly have some planted along my back and side fence. Additionally it keeps cats at bay which is obviously a benefit to most gardeners (although I do love cats).
The Hawthorn is one of the earliest trees to start budding leaves and is a cheerful reminder that spring and summer is on the way in the late winter months. In addition it is happy in almost any soil type and particularly seems to enjoy dry and arid ground. It ...
