It doesn't get more central than the heart of Amsterdam, which is about 30 yards into the vibrant red light district. I would urge people to take the other review with a pinch of salt, bearing in mind that this is more suited to young people who are going to Amsterdam to generally get wrecked. Having said that, it will suit anyone, as it is a hotel and hostel, with the choice of rooms or dormitories with up to 10 beds. The rooms are well priced and will set you back 200 euros or so for a week. The dorm rooms are more modestly priced and can be snapped up for the bargain price of 20 euros a night, leaving you with more spending money. I generally found the place to be friendly, safe and clean, all for an unbelievably cheap price. It may be better to try and book out entire dorms, as this removes the risk of there being any weird strangers sleeping next to you. When some friends and me went however, the strangers that we shared a room with either kept to themselves or were friendly and sociable.
The facilities are fairly basic, with dorm rooms having shared showers and toilets. Standard rooms include en-suite bathrooms and all rooms include a TV with a range of channels, in a number of languages. The beds are made and sheets changed daily, which is great service for a budget hostel. Lockers are provided to store valuables, but I would advise everyone to keep their valuables on them as tourists are always vulnerable to being victims of crime. There is a small room to the left of the main reception, which includes vending machines, for all those late night munchies, and a computer for Internet access. It also has a TV for some late night entertainment and thinks it is where breakfast is served, although I never made it myself. There is also a small courtyard, which is a great way of meeting new people. The hotel staff are fine with people blazing weed in the courtyard, so there is likely be a welcoming smell when you return to the hotel.
I would recommend this to anyone who is mature, sensible, can look after themselves and is looking for a bargain. It provides quality accommodation for a criminally low price, even offering a selection or single and twin rooms for big spenders. There are other hostels and hotels around, but the heart of Amsterdam is cheap, cheerful and attracts a great variety of people from around the world. Anyone who wants to visit Amsterdam and doesn't mind being in a busy part of town should definitely check out the heart of Amsterdam. This may be a bit of an anti-climax, but you should be aware that my friend and me were actually robbed when staying in the hotel part of the heart of Amsterdam. Whilst we slept, someone climbed through our window and cleared the bedside table of all its valuables. They even stole a small bag of cheap weed, in Amsterdam of all places! We did leave the window open and think that the people who did this were British, although we never proved it. Whilst staying in the hostel part of the heart of Amsterdam, we experienced no such trouble and found it to be very safe and secure. So save your money and your possessions and book you and your friends into one of the many dorm rooms in the heart of Amsterdam!!
Advantages: None Disadvantages: IN Red Light District, Hostel - NOT Hotel as advertised
This place is a hole. It's not a hotel it's a hostel. In late-June when myself and 5 friends (all girls) visited Amsterdam we were under the impression we would have a room by ourselves but when we got there they put us in a 12-bed dormitory with six men. We paid 34 euro each per night which is not cheap and for what we actually got it was a rip-off. This dormitory they put us in was filthy. Ants all over the floor, the toilet was disgusting, the ... ...all over the floor. We wanted to leave but we'd already paid and they wouldn't give us our money bank, and we couldn't afford to lose that amount of money. On our first night there we got no sleep whatsoever - we all slept in our clothes and there were men coming into and going out of the room all night. We skipped breakfast! After seeing the state of the room we didn't want to chance the kitchen. We did kick up a bit of a fuss and on our second ...
