I first tried the Heathrow Express in June 1998 when Tony Blair officially launched the £455 millions airport-link in London. I was very impressed! Since then I have used the service many times (partly because I have worked as a contractor for BAA). The high-tech trains are fast and comfortable with air-conditioning and onboard TV. They are very quiet as they run on the specially built tracks for electric trains. The journey time between Paddington and Heathrow Airport is only 15 minutes (further 7 minutes to/from Terminal 4). The service runs from 5am to 11.45pm every day in the year (including Christmas Day) with four departures every hour. There are two Heathrow Express stations in the airport; the Heathrow Central station is underneath Terminal 1 (from the station you walk to Terminal 2 and 3), and the Heathrow Terminal 4 station is obviously underneath Terminal 4. By the way, the train rides between Terminals in the airport are free.
When you come to Paddington Station, look for the silver trains with futuristic look and smoky glass windows (at Platform 6 and 7). Get on board and you'll be seeing the blue sky sooner than you think!

The Service was launched in 1998 and ten years later is still going strong. The trains run from early (around 5am) in the morning until late (just before midnight) generally every 15 minutes. Tickets:
There are various ways to buy tickets. You can book online, buy at the ticket office or machine, or even buy on the train for a £2 surcharge. Prices:

Express Class is pretty good-well when you are paying £1 a minute you expect it to be! The trains are all new looking and clean inside which is a bonus. There is also air-conditioning and I love how the train floor is level with the platform so you don't have any problems with any luggage. There is also ample space ...

...the plunge and rode the Heathrow Express. What a great experience. The tube is painfully slow, overcrowded and full of schoolkids and other commuters not willing to make allowances for your oversized suitcases. The concept:

The Heathrow Express is a completely different experience.
It leaves from paddington (which could be a disadvantage for some - it isnt excatly the west end) and drops you off either at Terminals 1,2,3 or ... ...free transit between the two Heathrow stations.
It runs every 15 mins, which although less often than the tube, is more than enough. It takes 15 min to terminal 1,2,3 and and extra 5 min to terminal 4. Im not sure yet how it'll work when terminal 5 opens. It is designed for passengers with luggage, and has a certain feeling of luxuary about it.

...Continental standards. The service to Heathrow form Paddington is a god-send. It finally allows people to get to the airport without having to catch the tube (tried that with luggage??!!). You can check in at Paddington and just jump straight on the train. The service itself seems reliable, at least I didn't have any problem either way and the train is nice and comfortable. There's space for luggage and few TVs in each carraige showing information ... ...15 minutes and is suprisingly smooth given the current state of the tracks. They must be new. Once the train arrives at Heathrow, it's extreamly easy to get into the airport. The platform at the airport is clean and tidy and has plenty of automatic ticket booths. The price is around £12 one way and £20 return. A bit overpriced for the length of the journey, but I suppose they have to pay for it some way. After travelling to London with First Great ...

...a choice to get to heathrow the tube of the heathrow express. And why exactly is their any competition - the tube with luggage and no fixed timetables - or the luxury of knowing exactly when you are gonna arrive in heathrow with comfy seats an somewhere to store the luggage safely. The only disadvantage is the cost - it is more expensive than the tube but if missing your plane is at stake isn't that worth the extra cost! I can undertanst getting ...

Advantages: close to paddington, cheap Disadvantages: tiny rooms, poor bathroom, old
I stayed at the Airways hotel before catching an early morning flight from Heathrow. Its proximity to the station makes it ideal for exactly this purpose with the HeathrowExpress leaving during the day and most of the night. The room rate was also very reasonable (£35 booked in advance via reservations website). However the rooms are very small, it's noisy and old and the single room at the top of the house has the most disgusting bathroom I have ever seen, with damp climbing up the walls. It was also marginally smaller than a brrom cupboard. I would ask to inspect the room before paying, but would not discount it completely as it very close to Paddington. However the road is lined with hotels, so might be worth shopping around. ...
Advantages: Central, Decent Breakfast, Handy for Heathrow Express Disadvantages: No Customer Service, No bar/tea making, Shabby rooms
We stayed here with friends who were on their first proper visit to London. They had been down for our Civil Partnership earlier in the year (See my other reviews)
We booked flights and accomodation through British Airways Holidays. As such we expected a certain standard, even though it was only rated 2 star.
The hotel is centrally situated on Craven Road, just 3 minute walk from Paddington Rail Station. This station is also the terminus for the HeathrowExpress which was handy for us.
The hotel looks very grandiose form outside. A few steps takes you inside to the reception area. The staff on reception appeared un-interetsed. They didn't make conversation, this may be because they didn't have good english.
On the British Airways Holiday website they advise there is a bar. This was never open!
Our rooms were on the 5th ...
Advantages: Large. Good facilities. Good shops. Disadvantages: Expensive to park. Check in can take time
London Heathrow is a massive airport and is the busiest international airport in the world. Its huge size brings both advantages and disadvantages.First there are currently four terminals, with Terminal One being for domestic flights, terminal two for European flights, terminal three for inter-continental flights and terminal four for British Airways and a number of other airlines. It is thus important before you set off for the airport to know which terminal you are flying from. Getting to the airport is relatively easy, you can take the tube, the HeathrowExpress rail link -very expensive, a cab.mini car or the Airbus. There are shuttle buses operating between the different terminals.Secondly although there are a lot of car parking places, they are pretty expensive,so I prefer to use public transport to the airport.
The terminals are all ...
