After years of struggling on the tube, I finally took the plunge and rode the Heathrow Express. What a great experience. The tube is painfully slow, overcrowded and full of schoolkids and other commuters not willing to make allowances for your oversized suitcases.
The concept: ------------------ The Heathrow Express is a completely different experience. It leaves from paddington (which could be a disadvantage for some - it isnt excatly the west end) and drops you off either at Terminals 1,2,3 or a separate station for terminal 4. You can also use it as a free transit between the two Heathrow stations. It runs every 15 mins, which although less often than the tube, is more than enough. It takes 15 min to terminal 1,2,3 and and extra 5 min to terminal 4. Im not sure yet how it'll work when terminal 5 opens.
It is designed for passengers with luggage, and has a certain feeling of luxuary about it.
Tickets ---------- Tickets can be bought at the station. There is no need to book in advance, although you can pre-buy tickets (on the net) if you wish. SOme of the airlines are beginning to let you book online when buying a flight ticket (eg JAL)
It costs a whopping £13 single or £25 return (2005) which I believe is the most expensive train journey per mile in the world! There is also a 1st class option which is MORE expensive. However, it is certainly worth it. You arive at the airport a mere 15 mins (or 20 to T4) after leaving central london.
Note - travelcards are NOT valid, and neither are oystercards.
Advantages over the tube ---------------------------------- You will almost definately get a seat and even get a short BBC news programme on the onboard TV's. Punctuality is excellent in my experience.
How to cheat ------------------ I belive there is a new service called Heathrow Connect. It is the same route, but makes some intermediate stops. It is designed for local commuters to Heathrow. The line isnt really advertsied from Paddington, but you can board there. It is slightly cheaper at 9.50 and takes 28 mins (as opposed to 15).
The bottom line --------------------- There isnt much else to say, except if you are willing to spend the extra, its definately worth it. Give it a go!
