Advantages: Good base for exploring, good selection of shops, bars and restaurants. Disadvantages: Not as pretty as some other places. Building work is a problem at the moment.
...in Ostende ~ there is plenty of choice. We had either bratwurst, frites and mayonnaise, or some seafood from the stalls that line the pavement near the harbour (wonderful trays of mixed shellfish). These were very reasonably priced (two Euros for a huge bratwurst!) and the fritte shop had an area where you could eat in (and toilets too). There are lots of other restaurants if you wanted a larger meal (Chinese restaurants, pizza places and bars serving mussels and other Belgium dishes), but we just needed a snack.
~~~TRANSPORT.
Belgium trains and trams are great and very novel for the British traveler ~ they actually run on time!!! On our first evening we got a tram along the coast to the next resort up the coast (De Haan) for a drink in a bar that was recommended to us. A return cost us just over 3 Euros ~ you can either buy your tickets...

...convenient with the rail station- if you want to go to Bruges ,Bruxelles,or Liege- and the tram stops where you can conveniently catch the tram to take you along the pleasant coast line-all nicely integratd at the terminal. Oh how I wish that was the case in Dover where both the Eastern and Western Docks are a considerable distance away from the Dover rail station whilst the Stagecoach bus services only go to the Western Docks.
Accommodations in Ostend- or Oostende in the local lingo- are very reasonably priced-I stayed in a two star hotel for only around 17 pounds and even if you want to move to a 3 star place...
