On the tour we were taken to Mirabell Gardens where Maria and the children danced around the Statue of Pegasus fountain, through the tree-lined arches and up the steps. We went to Leopoldskron Castle and lake, HellbrunnCastle grounds to see the glass pavillion where ''I am 16, going on 17'' was sung so beautifully, Nonnberg Abbey which is the oldest convent in the German-speaking part of Europe. The real Baron and Maria were married here in 1927 and it is where Maria returned to late, while the nuns were going to mass at the beginning of the movie. Advantages: lovely town, beautiful scenery, a lot of history and culture Disadvantages: sometimes crowded (mainly in August)
...on a rock (120 meters high) close to the centre, overlooking the whole of the Salzburg area.
You can go there using the funicular, or simply walk upwards. The former stronghold of the Prince-Archbishops offers a breathtaking panorama view.
Inside the castle, a lot of rooms are open to the public (guided tours available) where you can still see some of the original decorations, furniture, carpets, china, paintings etc.
If you have time, visit the museum (Burgmuseum) to see very interesting medevial art and arms.
MIRABELL GARDENS
A very nice park at the other side of the Salzach river is Mirabell Gardens. Unfortunately, not much is left of the original palace, but the gardens are worth a visit (many flowers, sculptures, pools) - a place to sit down and relax.

...of the boat in their glee at seeing their father back from his month away in the city. The venetian room from this castle was copied and used as the ballroom in the movie. As you stand at this lake - behind you is Untersberg Mountain which features in the movie and is most dominant in the Salzburg scenery.
Then it is off to the 17th century HellbrunnCastle where the glass pavilion now stands a re-creation to satisfy the fans which still return over 40 years after the movie was filmed. (I was part of a full bus - still keen to see all that is The Sound of Music.) Here's the place to sing ''I am 16 going on 17'' if you feel you must.
(On the way to HellbrunnCastle you see a big yellow house which is the actual house which they used to ''live in'' in the movie - so you learn the ''house'' was actually filmed as a front at Leopoldskron...
