Porthleven is a small, picturesque fishingvillage two miles from Helston. We have been holidaying here as a family for the past eight years and think it is fantastic both in the summer and in the autumn.
The journey to and from Porthleven can be quite long and tiring especially when you get caught in traffic, as so often happens when you travel down in the summer. We tend to leave home early in the morning and stop off at various places to break the journey up a bit and avoid wasting a day to travel. We have breakfasted on Bodmin Moor (in search of the legendary beast, visted Tintagel Castle (more about that later), JamaicaInn, Port Isaac and various other sights along the way.
Porthleven itself is a quaint fishing village/town, the main body of which is situated around the walled harbour. This is a lovely place to walk around in the Summer and we often head over to The Ship Inn which is situated on the far side of the harbour. This is also a great place to eat - our favourite for a pub snack or evening meal. This place has bags of character and is reputed to have smugglers passageways running beneath it! The bar itself is small and not suitable for children, however they do have a very cosy family room but on busy days this can get quite full.
As well as the public houses there are also plenty of restaurants to try, most of which offer some sort of sea food speciality on the menu. If you prefer to self cater however, the village does have a grocery shop which is good to pick up most things if you can't be bothered to drive to Helston and the larger supermarket.
For days out and activities, Porthleven is a great base. There are plenty of beautiful coastal walks , one of our particular favourites being a circular walk aroung Loe Bar and a bit further away a walk around Frenchman's creek. A days fishing is another activity that Porthleven offers. The trips are usually 2 or 4 hours and obviously dependent on clement weather conditions, one of the bonuses of this excursion are that you get to take your catch home with you to eat!!
Further afield there are many things to go and do. There are some good beaches on the south coast but for real surf adicts the north coast is the place to be. We like Perranporth a large beach with plenty of space for everyone which is about 45 minutes away in the car.
The Eden project is a good day out although can be very busy which to me spoiled it a bit. Tintagel Castle - reputed home of King Arthur and Merlin is also interesting but quite a drive from Porthleven. Other good sights to visit include: The Minnack Theatre, Goonhilly Earth Satellite Station and the Lizard (Britain's most southerly point.). Lands End is a bit disappointing as it is so commercialised but it is nice to say you've been there.
There are loads of places to go, I've barely scratched the surface. All I can say is as long as you are not too put off by a bit of a car journey, go to Cornwall and visit Porthleven. It's fantastic.

Good review, but it is best to write to e-mail Ciao and ask them to add this place and move your review over.

I feel a bit mean, but while this would be a helpful review of Portleven it's really off topic as far as Helston goes. If the place you want to write about as a category isn't available then rather than writing in the closest available category it's best to propose a new one.
