Chocolate Is In The Air

Advantages: The one, the only Chocolate Town USA
Disadvantages: Tons of visitors every day; not the cheapest day out ever

Milton Hershey was not originally a chocolate man. His specialty was caramels for several years during a time when chocolate was just something some people covered these with. However, when one day he saw some kids take one of these covered varieties, lick the chocolate off and chuck the caramel part away, he realised chocolate could become a big thing in the future and set about selling his caramel business and setting up a chocolate ...
...this weekend. Here’s another: Milton Hershey had such a sensitive palate he could taste the difference between factory and farm grown chickens. And yet this was the man who tasted European chocolate, didn’t like it, and set about making his own stuff. Crazy.

Hershey, Pennsylvania was the eventual setting for this venture after he tried, and failed, in several other areas of the country. The state is rich in dairy farms which is important ... more

Hershey Park, Hershey - Pennsylvania

Advantages: Great theme park rides, lovely zoo, so much to do.
Disadvantages: Horrible american chocolate, cost of food.

...but the tour around the Hershey factory is worth it for the Kids. The Theme Park itself is fantastic! There's something for everyone: fast rollercoasters, wild adventure rides, children's rides, an excellent zoo, water play areas as well as rides (gorgeous on a hot summer day). The wooden-framed roller coaster is terrifyingly good. There areoften new rides every season and there were some plans for some excellent new rides on show whilst we were ...
...Hersheypark opens at 10am everyday and according to season can stay open until 10 or 11pm some nights. Hershey is like a typical day at Alton Towers but you do get more for your money and can pretty much guarantee the great weather if you go in the summer months. ...

Comfort Inn, Hershey PA - Comfort at a Price

Advantages: Big beds, located near Hershey Park, Pennsylvania
Disadvantages: VERY, VERY overpriced

THE DAY BEGINS - Background ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ DATELINE – 21st August 2003. For the past couple of weeks, my husband my daughter and myself have been on holiday in the Philadelphia area of the USA. Looking on the map for something to do, we spot Hershey Park – a chocolate themed…well…theme park. It looked to be about two hours away by car. Three hours later (ever present roadworks on the Pennsylvania Turnpike), we arrive at the park, and spend an enjoyable few hours on coasters (OK, I just watched that bit), on water rides, and in queues. Stupidly, we left the water rides until last. Soaking wet, we do the little ‘ridette’ showing us how they make chocolate, have some dinner, and shivering, leave the park at around 9.30 for the drive home. We drive out of the park, and find ...

Review of Comfort Inn, Hershey

RED. Adj. "Dubious brown / slightly stained"

Advantages: Good location, cheap, fairly clean
Disadvantages: Tatty round the edges, no facilities

To spend a decent length of time travelling in the USA you either need to be loaded or be willing to stay in cheap, potentially grotty little motels on occasion. When I went to Hershey I stayed in one such place, a motel in the Red Carpet Inn chain. Hershey has a mix of posh theme park hotels a la Disney, and cheaper, tattier chains such as Days Inn. They are all pretty much the same price, so I chose the one I did because I?d not encountered the chain before, and thought I?d try my luck. I arrived around 10pm having been to work that day and Greyhounded in in the evening. Despite the late hour, the reception was manned by a terrible English speaker with a kind smile. She found my reservation quickly, accepted the credit card I offered up, and dished out a room key. The branch I was at was a 2-story affair which edged round the main ...

Review of Red Carpet Inn, Hershey

No other place quite like NYC

Advantages: Amazing city, great shopping. Everything really.
Disadvantages: 7hr flight away!!

Hilton, four of us shared a room with two double beds and cost £237 per night. We stayed for just two nights as we were on the way back from our main holiday in Vermont. Travelling in New York is easy, the famous bright yellow cabs are everywhere you look and are fairly cheap. We did see several buses although we didn't get on any, the Subway (like the London Undergroud) was also resonable priced. New York offers something for everyone. It is known as the shopping capital of the world and the clothes are so much cheaper than in England, New York is also home to the famous Macys, Bloomingdales and Saks Fifth Avenue shops. Times Square- Lights brighter than you could possibly imagine. Full of shops, nightlife and resturants, also the 16 storey Hersheys chocolatr shop. Central Park- Great for sunbathing, relaxing, picnics and sport in ...
