Before I begin please allow me to explain that just because they're called Hertfordshire Rail Tours (HRT) doesn't mean they are exclusively for Hertfordshire and/or just do tours around Hertfordshire via Rail.
~ About ~ Hertfordshire Rail Tours create trips, a.k.a: Rail Tours, around the United Kingdom and sometimes aboard. Destination could include anywhere of interest or to go see a special event like the Edinburgh Royal Tattoo. Their offices are based in Hertfordshire.
~ Tours ~ Most of the tours run from a major London station like; Paddington, Kings Cross, Waterloo or even Euston. The trains will normally stop at significant stations along the route so that people may use a station more closer to them to save having to go into London just to go out of London. For example, lets say I was on a tour to Edinburgh; The train would leave London Kings Cross and then stop at may be Alexandra Palace and Potters Bar. A lot of the services do actual stop at Potters Bar anyway since this is perfect for people who live near/around the M25.
There are various different tours available and it's well worth checking out their website.
For some tours you can only have First Class or only have Standard Class seats for whatever reason.
Times are somewhat reasonable but be warned that if you miss the train I think you can't get a refund.
~ Prices ~ Prices do depend on certain circumstances. For instance, the longer the journey / distance may mean a higher price. Most tours allow you to choose either Standard Class or First Class ticket types. Naturally First Class costs more but it's worth it since you get extra benefits / features like food or drinks served at your table. Standard Class passengers can choose to either bring their own food or buy food on-board the train at the decent priced (last time I remember) buffet which serves a range of hot and cold food or drink items.
~ The Trains ~ The train used on any tour really depends on vary circumstances. Sometimes they do trips abroad and use Eurostar and/or TGV. What normally happens is that Hertfordshire Rail Tours hire an EW&S* diesel locomotive -- very reliable -- and then I think they own or hire out a certain amount of MK1 stock carriages for the tours / trips / journeys -- very comfortable.
~ A Quick Story ~ Well firstly the seats on the MK1 stock carriages are very comfortable to sit in and the seats are very springy which makes it all the more comfortable.
One time on one trip the train came upon a junction and we were supposed to take the left route but I think someone didn't change the points correctly and we ended up going straight ahead for a very short while but the train stopped quickly enough [this was at HitchinJunction for those who want to know]. We then had to reverse up (the poor people at the station must be confused), wait for the points to change and then carry on.
So to finish up, Hertfordshire Rail Tours are great and I would definitely suggest checking them out then may be considering taking a trip with them.
