We had booked our hire car through expedia.com. They had quoted for a compact car $33 (18 pounds 15 pence) per day including taxes, from Hertz. When we arrived at Jacksonville airport, we were running late, due to our flight. Jacksonville, North Carolina is such a small airport that we only had a few steps to the Hertz counter. There was no one behind the counter. We started to look around, and a young lady hurried towards us.
I had my paperwork out, and she pulled up our details. It only took her a few minutes to go over the contract with us, and for Len to sign the paperwork, as he was doing the driving. She asked if we wanted to pay for the gas, or bring the car back full. We were
only planning on staying from Friday evening to Sunday morning, so said we would return the car full. She informed us of a garage two and a half miles away, where we should top the gas up. I asked her if she had a local map we could have. Len had pulled up 'Map Quest' and we had directions from Jacksonville, but not from the airport, which was outside of the city. She gave us two maps and highlighted the whole route for us.
I saw a notice stating that the office didn't open until noon on Sunday, so I asked her what we should do. She told us to complete the back of the form she was giving us, and to put the keys in the drop box. Our rental car was in the first parking slot for Hertz.
We headed outside and found the Hertz cars. The first one had a New Jersey license plate, the next one was Michigan. We guessed people must have been picking up cars in one city and dropping them off in another. The funniest thing is, we live in Florida and got the New Jersey plate, and Len's daughter lives in New Hampshire and got a Florida plate. Our car was a 4 door fiesta. Len very quickly looked around it and we were off. The car was exactly what we had asked for. It was mainly for the two of us, but we knew we would be taking one other person back to the airport with us. That is why we wanted the 4 door model.
On the Sunday morning, we were stuck in Sneads Ferry, as Tampa airport had been closed for Hurricane Jeanne. I telephoned the 1-800 number for Hertz to inform them that we needed the car until Monday or possibly Tuesday. The internet price was $33 for the first 2 days, but if it wasn't returned on time the rate would go up to $48 per day. I had to hold for around 30 minutes until I got a very helpful service representative. I explained the situation, and we had no problems keeping the hire car. We would be charged the same rate, and could return it either of the days.
When we finally got the go ahead from U.S. Airways to go back to Jacksonville airport, we took the same route back. We found the garage and Len was only able to fill the car with $5 (2 pounds 75 pence) of gas. What an economical car, it did 40 to the gallon. Over twice the mileage to the gallon than Len's or my car does.
We drove into the first available space, took the mileage details, and into the airport. The same lady was on duty and surprised to see us. We told her that we were from the Tampa Bay area, and how the main office had been so helpful. She recorded the mileage and asked if the vehicle was full. She accepted our word for it and didn't go out to check the car. Our bill ran $99 as quoted.
We headed to get on stand by for Charlotte, and then stopped off at the little cafe. While we were there, the Hertz lady came up to Len. She asked him for the car keys, as he had forgotten to give them to her. I am so pleased he didn't take them on the flight with him.
We were extremely happy with Hertz. The staff were friendly. The car was clean, ran well, and we had no problems with it. After our last experience with Avis, I will be happy to continue using Hertz.
It took us all day to get from Jacksonville, to Charlotte, and then to Tampa Bay. We were worried what we would find. Luckily we only lost a tree, and power for 2 days. Some of our friends came off a lot worse than us.
Thank you for driving with me today.
Susie.
