I recently booked a car rental via Hertz for 6 weeks car hire in the United States at a cost of over £1500. 2 weeks into the rental period we realised we were not using the car as much as anticipated and rang the hertz US call centre to arrange an early return intending to save money and hire cars on an as needs basis, I was assured I would only be charged for the period used, and duly returned the car. No credit was subsequently posted to my card, and I took the matter up with Hertz UK customer relations - who take 2 weeks as a matter of course to answer any enquiry. They say that there is no refund due, it states in there smallprint that they do not refund prepaid rentals if the car is handed back early. They are refusing to refund nearly $1000 worth of prepaid/unused rental. It is scandalous. I will never use Hertz again, and would not recomend them to anyone.

Thank you for your comments Phil.....however 1/. You ignore the fact I called Hertz US call Centre prior to returning the car early, and was told I would only pay for the time the car was used 2/. You should also be aware that this onerous term only applies to pre-paid rentals....had I gone in on spec and taken the car for 6 weeks, and returned it after 2 weeks, I would have paid only on return for the period of actual use. 3/. I have good awareness of the commercial realities....and the car will have been subsequently rented out...in the same way that most good honerable hotel operators will accept reasonable cancellation or a shorter stay without penalty or some nominal/reasonable penalty. The least I should expect is a credit for future rentals commensurate with the unused period

Yes it may seem harsh that no refund is due back to you,however in the terms and conitions it did state this, most major car hire firms have the same t's & c's.
Hertz have reserved this car for you for the period you originally booked and may have subsequently turned down bookings for this vehicle, they need to make up for lost revenue. It's similar to an airline not refunding money after you've paid for a seat, Again it's all in the small print. Sorry
