INTRODUCTION
Brussels is a handy place to meet if you're in the South Netherlands and your girlfriend is in London. Thanks to Eurostar and Dutch rails, we can both make it there in a couple of hours. My girlfriend managed to get a great deal on a hotel thanks to Expedia, and so here is a review of that hotel, which in my opinion is well worthy of consideration. Seems like the name has slighly changed since this was added to Ciao in 2006, to Eurostars Sablon. I checked the address and I've got the right place!
THE LOCATION
Hotel Eurostars Sablon is located opposite the Museum of Ancient and Modern Art in the city centre, 500 metres from the Royal Palace. This makes it a very handy location for the tourist areas. We found it a five minute walk to the Central train station, and a ten minute walk to the main tourist area of Grand Place. Even better was the fact that near to the hotel were several
excellent restaurant with reasonable prices. One pretty little alley nearby has 5 or 6 decent looking restaurants, or if you wanted to you could always get fleeced on the Grand Place. There were also a few interesting bars in the area. We found a nice quiet one with just a few locals in, so that was good to try something different.
THE HOTEL
We didn't use any of the facilities such as the restaurant, as breakfast was not included and you could get excellent food anywhere around there. The room was pretty acceptable. It was of a reasonable size, clean and carpeted. On the walls were a couple of framed prints of either Greek or Roman scenes. I'm not classical enough to know the difference I'm afraid. There was a mini bar fridge filled with soft drinks, some small spirit bottles and snacks such as nuts, chocolate bars and crisps. There wasn't a kettle or tea and coffee though. There was a small CRT (i.e old fashioned, not LCD) TV which had about 20 channels on it including BBC1 and BBC2. Apparently there was wireless internet access as well but we didn't use this. The bed was advertised as King size but was in fact 2 large singles pushed together. They were, however, pretty comfortable, so no problems there. There were also 2 small cushions placed on the pillows. On either side of the bed was a small bedside table. The windows look out onto the front of the hotel, which is in a side street, so the view wasn't that pretty but there was a decent amount of light coming into the room. Near thw windows was a small round table. Two metal chairs with wicker seats were in the room, and they were quite comfortable. Near to the door was a trouser press and a thermostat. The wardrobe contained some hangers, an extra blanket and a safe, which was very easy to use, not always the case with hotel safes. There was also a disposable shoe cleaning kit.
The bathroom was clean and quite small, as the toilet was separate, which itself had a small wash basin. It had a shower bath and wash basin. In the bathroom was a retractable clothes lines which is a handy little addition. Near the basin were some toiletries - some tissues, a comb, shower gel, a shower cap a shaving kit and a dental kit. This was very impressive and over and above what you'd usually expect. There was also a mounted hair dryer which had a shaver socket in it. The shower itself was fine. It was an attachment to the bath taps, which seems quite usual in these parts. The water was a bit slow draining from the bath though but it wasn't too bad.
Check in is from 3pm and check out is before noon according to the Expedia information, but best to check this when you arrive as I asked in reception and they told me check out was actually 11am.
CONCLUSION
This was a pretty good hotel; clean, well located and an amazing price from Expedia of just under 50 pounds a night for the both of us! There seems to be a complimentary breakfast buffet usually, but for that price, who cares if it wasn't included! The reception staff seemed friendly and I was impressed overall. I would definitely check to see if there are any good deals for staying here.
Well, great review about an hotel in Brussels. I don't know where it is, as I'm not from Brussels, only there 5/7 days a week for my studies but I know that Central Station is very near the Royal Palace and the Fine Arts Museum (and I think the Instrument one).
