~ ~ The Hibernian Hotel used to be the nurses’ home for the old Baggot Street Hospital, until it was literally stripped back to the bare walls, and turned into one of the better hotels in Dublin in the early 1990’s. It won the national award for the “Small Luxury Hotel of the Year” in 1997, and was also awarded the AA Courtesy & Care Ireland Award in 1999.
~ ~ On entering the reception area of the Hibernian, you might be forgiven for thinking that you’d come to the wrong address, as it manages to give the illusion of not being a hotel at all, but instead a rather well-appointed, large Georgian house, who just happen to take in guests. They’ve managed somehow to arrange all their public rooms, dining room, and bars in such a way as to give their guests a feeling of warmth and intimacy, like you would get as a visitor to someone’s private home. One of the busiest streets in Dublin, Baggot Street, is only a couple of steps away from the front porch, but you wouldn’t realise this once you are inside the Hibernian, and feel as though you are ensconced in a tranquil sea of calm. All the hustle and bustle, the hectic traffic, and the rushing hither and thither of a modern city are soon forgotten.
~ ~ It has a vibrant manager called David Butt who is one of the finest hoteliers you’d ever care to meet, with his genial and genuine nature, which he seems to pass on to his young and enthusiastic staff.
~ ~ You can be assured of good food as well. They have a new executive chef called Norbert Neylon, whose exquisite cooking and use of only the very finest of natural Irish produce, has made the restaurant a name for itself in the city, distinct from the hotel itself. The Hibernian was the first hotel in Dublin to really accomplish this feat, and proved a template for others such as The Clarence and The Morrison to copy.
~ ~ This isn’t a large hotel by any means, with only 40 bedrooms, but all are decorated and furnished with impeccable taste, and provide all the amenities that the weary business person, traveller, or holidaymaker could desire, with satellite TV, full en-suite facilities, mini-bars, etc. There are off-street parking facilities in the old hospital car park, and the hotel is fully wheelchair accessible for handicapped guests, and also welcomes children with open arms.
~ ~ It’s location is ideal, and a brisk 10 minute walk will take you to St. Stephen’s Green with its magnificent inner-city park, or to Grafton Street, the main shopping area of the capital, where most of the fine stores have premises. There are also fine restaurants, fast food establishments, and innumerable good pubs all within a few minutes of the hotel, and if you are coming for an international rugby match, Lansdowne Road is only around the corner.
~ ~ The average price of a single room here is about £120, with a double from £150 to £185, which is fairly reasonable by Dublin standards for a hotel of this quality. Pretty decent pricess for Dublin I reckon... will keep this place in mind, we can never decide where to stay when we go down South! Great op Ken, All the best, Angela
