Having previously visited the spectacular Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, I was expecting to be disappointed when I visited High Force last autumn with my Girlfriend. The falls are a meagre 21m high but my opinion soon changed when I arrived.
The falls are only about 40 miles from Newcastle and the journey (directions below) will take you about an hour and a half. In all this may seem like the falls are not worth visiting, but if you have a free day whilst in Newcastle or Northumberland, pack a picnic and go.
The journey to the falls takes you through some beautiful countryside and small villages as you traverse across Teesdale. Eventually you will arrive at the falls, which are marked by a small car park, gift shop and a pub. It costs £1.50 to park and then a further £1 per person to take the woodland walk to the falls (50p for children). The walk is about 1/3 mile long and takes you along the river towards the plunge pool at the bottom of the falls. As you approach, you can start to hear the roar of the water before suddenly it is there in front of you. Depending on conditions, you can walk across some rocks to get closer to the falls, but the view from the marked areas is great also. There did appear to be some kind of path up towards the top of the falls, but this was closed when I visited.
After a while, watching the water cascade, you can head back to the car park and for those with kids, the gift shop sells the usual array of pens and pencils, for those more adult, the pub looked nice although we didn't go in.
I would thoroughly recommend a visit to the falls at some point as the peace and tranquillity of watching the destructive power of water is extremely relaxing. They will never live up to the splendour of their larger cousins in other parts of the world (Victoria, Niagara etc) but are one of the UK's most spectacular natural landmarks.

I think I may have to put this on my summer calender. I'd never heard of this before but it is easily accessable for a day trip and sounds lovely. Thanks. Trish x
