Scotrail provide what i can only ever describe as a brilliant and cheap service for Scotland. They cover some very remote routes, the ones that escaped the Dr Beeching cuts!, the train fleet is modern, clean and comfortable. I live in Inverness, and was delighted by my recent purchase of a Highland Railcard for only £7.50 per year.

You send in your proof of residence, £7.50, and fill out the application form. A couple of weeks later you receive a nice little purple railcard in a plastic purple Scotrail ticket wallet. You sign it and off you go. The card can only be used by the person named on the railcard, and you must always carry it with you on journeys where you are using railcard discounted tickets, otherwise you will be liable for the full fare.
For local residents its a brilliant deal. You only need to use it once on the cheapest journey (Innverness to Kyle, £15 day return normal fare) and it has fully paid for itself. Although the card is advertised, a lot of people dont seem to know about it in the area.
Now that i have it, i have used it to go for a lot of day trips between Glasgow and Oban, Inverness to Kyle and other destinations. Its so cheap it makes you want to go away for a day, and the scenery on these railway lines is amazing. The trains are never really that busy except during tourist summer months, the staff are great and the trolley makes regular apperances. The journey times can be longer than driving, but at these low discounted prices you dont care at all! And you always arrive on time!
If you live in the postcode areas that are included i would tell everyone to buy a railcard and make use of this brilliant service to ensure the survival of these under utilised lines, and have some great days out on the cheap!
