Last week myself and few friends went on a trip to Hikkaduwa. The Hikkaduwa beach is situated 98km away from Colombo towards the South of Sri Lanka. Snorkelling and diving in the clear water are the major past time along this strech. This is the most environmentally friendly way to see the colourful fish that dart around. The coral sanctuary on the coast of Hikkaduwa is a large shallow expanse of water enclosed by a reef, decorated with layers of multi coloured corals which is a home to countless number of attractive fish.
There were tiny islets surrounded by beautiful coral formations off the beach. The main reason for many tourists to visit this coastal town is the reputation as the second best surf spot in Sri Lanka. However people of this area lost their jobs who involved in boat services because of the drop of tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka.
The beaches are not only fine and wide but also swimming is safe here. The impressive coral reef runs just offshore. It is still populated by exotic fish and sea turtles. There are days which are suitable to go for outing by a boat. It was not so pleasant to go for us because the see was rough. We had to spend a short time treading water. When the boat came we had to virtually jump into the boat. Further we came to know that there are 113 varieties of fish on these corals. Before you enter the boat you must take care of your bags and cameras because they could be damaged by the see water. When we were entering the boat it was wobbling and we were unable to control our bodies for a few seconds. It was a nice experience unlike the boat ride on a river.
The glass bottomed boat was safe and six persons can be accommodated. There were two fitting benches inside on the boat. After a few minutes we got the chance to see many species of colourful fish and some kind of corals under the sea water. It was also an amazing experience to see too large turtles swimming along when we went by beach. If you go there you may also be lucky to see them on your boat safari to the coral.
If you want to take clear photographs you must carry an underwater camera. The person who is accompanying us said "There are6 varieties of corals on Hikkaduwa coral reef such as Stag Horn, Elk Horn, Cabbage, Brain, Table and Star coral. In addition to them we can also see some varieties of Algae such as Halimeda spp, Ulva spp, Padina spp and majorities are caulerpa spp"
After a short distance southwards from the centre of the reef there you can find a wider sandy bottomed beach with good waves ideal for boat surfing and body surfing. There is a possibility to rent the necessary equipment needed for snorkeling and surfing. Surfing at Hikkaduwa is quite well known.
Further there you can find many shops selling masks, gems, jewellary, Batik dresses and antiques etc. I really enjoyed the coral safary. You are also invited to gain the amazing experience as soon as possible.
