My partner and I decided to go for a city break to Amsterdam – somewhere we had fancied for a while and it provided me a chance to fly for the first time. After much shopping around, we booked (via Thompson online) for a 2 night stay at the 5 start Hilton Amsterdam (with direct flights from Cardiff with KLM) for approximately £280 pp.
The hotel is about 15 minutes in a cab from Schipol airport (approximately 30 euro) which is what we opted for, although the Airport – Hotel shuttle bus stops outside the hotel and there is a tram stop just around the corner.
On arriving at the hotel, which is in a quiet residential area, just outside the main centre, you are greeted by a gentleman in a long which tail coat, who opens the door for you and takes you luggage.
Check in was very efficiently handled, we asked for a canal view room, a request which was granted without any hastle. Once the normal form filling was complete (name, address, passport number etc) we allocated our electronic key cards and told that our bags would be taken up shortly.
Our room, on the second floor, although not huge was a nice size, lovely and clean and tidy, with a wardrobe, mini bar, personal electronic safe (for which there was no extra charge), desk, flat screen TV (including some British satellite channels), a queen sized bed with headboard mounted Led reading lights and a table with 2 chairs. The on suite bathroom was also of a good size and again clean and tidy with plenty of clean fresh towels and spa toiletries. The rooms are all air conditioned with individual controls to set the temperature and fan speed, but the windows in the room also open. When I first opened the window it wouldn’t shut, but a quick call down to reception and 10 minutes later a member of the house keeping team arrived to resolve it.
Shortly after we left to see the city centre. The concierges on duty all have good maps of the city and are happy to point out places of interest and advise on the best things to see, places to eat etc. They also have vouchers for money off some of the attractions including the primary canal tour provider. As mentioned above the nearest tram stop is only a few minutes walk from the hotel but we opted to walk the whole way – it is about 15 minutes to the Museum Square and Vondel Park with a further 5 / 10 minutes to the Leidesplein where there is a vast array of bars and pubs. If you want to go further a field, such as the red light district, then really a tram is needed.
The only meal we ate at the hotel was breakfast (which was included in our package), and there is very good variety. After being allocated a table, tea, coffee and toast as requested are brought to the table, everything else is on the self serve buffet – and the range is extensive. The is the cooked option (bacon, veal sausage, beans, tomato, potato), pancakes, waffles, all the continental options including muffins plus an array of quality fruit juices (including blended juices such as pineapple and strawberry).
We did look at menu in Robertos (the onsite Italian restaurant) but the menu is a la carte and rather expensive, snacks are also available in the bar which has a lovely relaxing view over the ‘marina’ (a small part of the canal where a few boats are kept) but again this is expensive, we had a few drinks the first night with a pint of Heineken costs 8 euros.
Check out was smooth, and the concierge had booked us a taxi which arrived spot on time. All in all we would go back to the Amsterdam Hilton as the quality of service can not be faulted.
