Back in June I needed a hotel in Chicago for a single Saturday night before flying back from Chicago O'Hare Airport to London Heathrow late Sunday evening. I didn't fancy dragging heavy luggage and shopping all the way into the Windy City just for one night (which can take about 40-60 minutes from Chicago O'Hare Airport, read on for more info on this...) and then back out again to the airport the next day, so I decided to consider hotels near Chicago O'Hare Airport. A quick search on Google suggested that the Chicago Hilton O'Hare Airport Hotel might be my best bet: http://www1.hilton.com/en_US/hi/hotel/CHIOHHH-Hilton-Chicago-O-Hare-Airport -Illinois/index.do - it is the only hotel physically linked to the airport building.
As I've mentioned in my other Hilton review so far, I am a member of the HiltonHonors club, which is free to join online and highly recommended for providing excellent room rates and special offers not found elsewhere, quite apart from being able to earn both HiltonHonors points AND airline miles from a variety of airline schemes. I went to the HiltonHonors site at www.hiltonhonors.com and was pleased to get a rate of US$160 including sales tax which was approx £80. Booking on the Hilton site is quick, safe and secure and I had my confirmation printed out after just a couple of minutes.
Arrival and Check-In:
I flew into Chicago O'Hare from Nashville, collected my luggage and made my way to the main Arrivals hall at the airport. It was great to immediately see a sign saying "Hilton" and despite the fact there was major refurbishment work going on in the Arrivals hall back in June 2007, it was easy to follow this clear signage which took me direct to the reception area of the Hilton in about a 5 minute walk, you don't have to go outside in the open air at any point which is a great bonus. A colleague has told me that on prior arrangement the Hilton will meet people at Arrivals who have mobility problems and provide assistance, which is good to hear.
The reception area is impossible to miss - it is
big, light and airy in this modern hotel, with a concierge desk near-by, seating area, free newspapers to pick up and other info on Chicago/Hilton hotels readily available and consists of a row of at least 8 check-in points, there is also an automatic check-in machine but I haven't used one of these so far! At the time of my arrival, there was no queue so I did not have to wait to be served. Later in my visit I was in the reception area when 40 or so people were arriving at once and noticed that ALL the check-in points were manned by personnel, which suggests good organisation at busy times.
Check-in was quick and painless and the receptionist provided a useful brief run-through of the hotel facilities, very professional. She also made sure I knew exactly which lifts to use to get to my room as she said it was easy to get lost if you took the wrong ones! I then went to the Concierge who was extremely helpful in finding out for me when the last subway train went from central Chicago to the Airport that evening, as I was going to a concert and would be travelling back late. He flatly refused a tip saying it really wasn't necessary and he hoped I would enjoy my stay in Chicago. These little touches are always nice...
Room:
Signage is clear from the lifts so no problem in finding my room. Card-key worked! Always a good start and it was immediately obvious on entering the room that it had been freshly aired that morning. Not too hot or cold - and no stuffy odours etc. The room was large with a full length window at the far end offering delightful views over a huge car-park! But at least it provided lots of natural light. Neutral decor in browns, beige and creams, very clean as far as I could see and furnishings included big desk with desk chair; very comfortable reclining armchair and coffee table; large reading light by that chair and on desk; HUGE TV with plenty of free channels including EXCELLENT local tourist channel providing info about Chicago and current events/exhibitions; plus all the pay per view which I don't use; lots of wardrobe and hanging/storage space; ironing board plus iron; hairdryer and full length mirror. Tea and coffee making facilities were provided with a good selection of tea/herbaltea and coffee including decaf. The room had high speed internet connection but I used the system on the TV where you paid about $10 for 24 hours access, it was clunky to use and a bit slow, but functioned fine otherwise. There is a mini-bar which I did not explore and the usual folder with writing paper/info about hotel etc.
The bathroom was typical marble tiling effect, big, good lighting for make-up, lots of fluffy towels, a nice comfy bathrobe plus usual Hilton extras such as La Sourcebody lotion, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, shower cap and the like. Very powerful shower with massage function which was extremely invigorating, and nice full length deep bath-tub for my night-time soak. Everything was clean and tidy.
I had a king-sized bed as requested in my reservation and it was SO comfortable. The Hilton offers different kinds of pillow - firm, soft and my favourite which is the sausage shaped one giving extra neck support. Lovely "fresh linen" smell of the sheets and all soft and pleasant on the skin - a real feel of luxury and quality. More blankets were available in the wardrobe if required. Additionally it was great that the bed directly faced the television and also had light switches right by for all the lights in the room! There was the usual telephone and clock radio with easy to work alarm.
Perhaps the best thing about the room is that like all rooms in the hotel, it is soundproofed, so you cannot hear any of the planes going over the hotel. Chicago O'Hare is one of the busiest airports in the world so this is naturally a really big bonus! I also couldn't hear any noises from other rooms or the corridor outside, so a great place for a good night's sleep.
Getting into Chicago:
The hotel IS quite a distance from the centre of Chicago, however the subway/underground train system is also directly connected to the airport and Hilton complex and it was an equally short walk to get to the ticket hall, buy a 48 hour ticket and hop on one of the very frequent trains right into the centre of the Windy City. However, it does take at least 40-50 minutes, a disadvantage had I been staying longer which is why I stayed in the city centre during the earlier part of my trip.
Some Chicagoan friends were horrified that I was planning on taking the subway back to the hotel after my evening concert in the City, but quite frankly I felt far safer than I would normally do on the London Underground as there are more personnel manning the stations, frequent security guards or police ON the trains and I never once encountered any of these horrid groups of drunken louts that you so often find on British trains. So I would feel happy recommending it as a way to get into the city from the hotel. Obviously taxis are available from the hotel and you can catch buses from the airport into town, but there are frequent traffic jams at peak hours and you might not be much quicker at the end of the day, quite apart from the fact that the train is MUCH cheaper - only $2 a ride or 1-day pass: $5, 2-day: $9, 3-day: $12 and 5-day: $18.
Facilities:
I did not use the pool/Jacuzzi/sauna facilities so can't comment about these, but did pass by the fitness centre which looked state of the art with something like 30 different machines for all kinds of workouts. There is a business centre with computers/photocopiers, but I didn't use it so don't know costs involved. I didn't use the two restaurants apart from breakfast the next morning, but arriving back after my concert well after 11pm I noticed that the atmospheric looking Sports Bar was still open and the barman was happy to fix me a pizza from the bar food menu. He gave me a complimentary orange juice while I waited and warned off a hopelessly drunk American who was starting to pester me rather than concentrate on the baseball game being shown on the huge screens behind the bar! Pizza was yummy and at only £6 for a huge freshly made pie, it was good value too.
Breakfast:
What can I say? I half expected to start going "Oink" and grow a little pink curly tail from making such a pig of myself! There is plenty of seating room in the breakfast/restaurant area, so no waiting, even though it looked busy, dirty tables were cleared quickly. As for the selection - VERY IMPRESSIVE! My choice - I had 2 glasses of orange juice, cereal, full hot breakfast including sausages, egg, bacon and hash browns, then to finish - pancakes with maple syrup and chocolate sauce... plus several cups of excellent coffee! My excuse is that I was going into Chicago to do some serious shopping before my flight home and needed energy! Unbeatable choice for all tastes and diets at breakfast and no-one seemed to mind you "stocking up" for the day ahead, so I grabbed 2 bananas and made up 2 bagels with ham/ pastrami/cheese fillings for my lunch later!
Check out is by 12 noon. No problems at check out and again, no waiting. Porters were very happy to tag my luggage and store it in a secure storage room - no charge, so I could whizz into Chicago to do my last minute massive discount shopping spree - of which you will hear the gruesome details in another review...
General impression:
All in all, an excellent hotel living up to what's best about the Hilton Brand, perfect if you are in transit through Chicago O'Hare and need a bed for the night. Maybe not the best choice if you are spending several days in Chicago, when there are plenty good hotels right in the centre, but otherwise I can't fault this as an accommodation choice. Highly Recommended.
