It was going to be oh so easy - from where we live, just a 35 minute drive..... Toria and I decided to have a girlie weekend, no washing up,eat when we like, shop till we drop, swim, sauna, jacuzzi and slob in front of a TV.
With that criteria - the hotel did not need to be far away as long as it was close to the shops (I'm still limping). I checked the internet for a LeisureBreak weekend deal and the Nottingham Hilton came up as favourite at £109 for two people - a room for two nights, breakfast two days and dinner on the first night.
It was going to be oh so easy - from where we live, just a 35 minute drive..... Toria drove and I navigated - what a mistake - we got stuck in the one way system in Nottingham city centre and even though we asked several people, we couldn't get near to the hotel. Eventually I gave up and rang my son who, from the peace of his computer in Swindon navigated his harrassed family members to the hotel door (We did have to do a u turn as by then we were going in completely the wrong direction).
So much for the cool ladylike entrance -Toria abandoned the car half on the pavement - there is nowhere to park outside the hotel, but I had been told there was valet parking at £12 per day - and I went to find someone to help us. The valet parking guys were very helpful emptied the car, took the keys and filled in a form with the time and date when we would want the car back. Calming a little we approached....
Reception - a large area with lounge seating where a lovely lady called Zoe found our booking but explained that the computers were 'down' and would we like to go and have a drink while we waited for our key card. We then walked about 10 foot from reception to the...
Bar area - decorated beautifully for the chinese new year, and waiting behind the bar was Philip, what a nice man - we ordered a gin and tonic and a malibu and sat down for some people watching...... In next to no time Zoe arrived with my key card and arranged our reservation for dinner - we took our time over our drinks and then headed for ....
Our room - on the second floor but there are two lifts! A lovely sized twin room with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space, coffee and tea making facilities, hair dryer, internet port and a TV with a card on top advertising the very film Toria wanted to slob out in front of. Whoopee!!!! Further investigation revealed....
The bathroom - spacious and very clean with fluffy white towels and wonderful shower cream, shampoo and conditioner - not the usual cheap and nasty stuff - back to the room and a quick look out of the window at...
The view - yes you guessed it - a bomb site/building site - derelict, boarded buildings were all we could see. But never mind that we decided to shower and 'tart' ourselves up for...
Dinner - don't really know what I expected but as it was in with the price of the room I wasn't too worried. We were shown to a table beside a huge fish tank (tropical not edible) where we ordered our starter and sweet from a printed menu - the main course was to be fetched from the carvery. We both ordered pate to start and fruit salad and cheese and biscuits to finish. The main course choices were amazing - chicken, beef, lamb, fish there was so much choice and it was cooked beautifully apart from the hard vegetables - does anyone really like them like that? We decided to take our sweets up to our room and start....
The film - big mistake! The TV would not work! We rang down to reception and they sent people to check it - eventually we managed to get one channel and that was it!! No film!!We watched what we could and had an early night in preparation for the next days shopping!! But first....
Breakfast - amazing choices, all self service but beautifully cooked and presented - or just cereals and toast for the less brave!!! It gave us the energy for our shopping trip - the Victoria centre was just two minutes limp away - and on our return we decided to use....
The leisure centre - a reviving dip in the pool, lovely... Toria tried the sauna and steam room as well and came out with the lovely 'lobster look'! The staff in the centre were really helpful and pleasant which made it a fun experience!!!
Ok - thats it really - after all it is a review of the hotel! Suffice to say that our clubbing evening that night was wonderful and we picked up a pizza on the way back - TV still didn't work but I think we were too drunk to care!!!
After breakfast next morning we checked out and waited for the car to be brought back - then we had help loading our stuff back in and waved off!!! We had a lovely time and I received a letter afterwards apologising for the lack of TV channels, apparently the glitch that caused the keycard problem had caused the TV problem too!!!
Good weekend though and we would do it again!!! Thanks for reading! Peace and love, Kate
Advantages: Good food, excellent staff, etc, etc Disadvantages: Damn air conditioning
As a few of you know, me and the other half were off to Nottingham for the weekend minus the kids. So now you lucky chaps get a lovely series of ops about our experiences in this fair city!
The first challenge was actually finding the place! Although its slap bang in the middle of the town centre, this city has the worse one way system in the whole world! It took going around about 3 times before we got there.
It’s a lovely red brick building, ... ...a rather peculiar corner plot. There is no parking, but an NCP directly opposite and the hotel offers valet parking.
This was the first thing that we took advantage of, a very friendly chap just inside the door took the keys and the details and removed it to an undisclosed destination. He also took the day and time that we where leaving and promised to have the car back then.
Of course this wasn’t free but we figured that the £12.50 per day was ...

Advantages: Beautiful building, loads of facilities, near to the town centre Disadvantages: Never know who you're sharing a room with!
Well Mes Amis, I?m off on my travels again, not with Alan this time but sprog number 1, she?s just turned 13 and its half term so time for some of that parent bonding malarkey. Not for her the heady heights of Nottingham, but the sedate sights of Salisbury. Nor for her a weekend in the HiltonHotel but a couple of nights in the local Youth Hostel. I?m not stingy but £14.90 for me, and £11/60 per night totalling £53.00 and including breakfast was far better than the £100 I would have had to pay for other B&B?s in the city.
So what?s the Youth Hostel Association? Simply it was an organisation set up for travellers to gain a good nights sleep at a great price. Primarily it was aimed at student and other people travelling around the UK. It was luxurious but simple basics. Nut now its grown and grown and grown, there are over 80 in the UK ...
