...to this would be price. Hilton managed to entice me to stay at their flagship Asian property In February and March this year due to a 70% discount promotion. Given the nature of the recession I thought it was best to slim my expenditure down to size and took a Grand Executive Suite at £110 a night. The usual price for this would be in excess of £250 a night and when you see the room, you can clearly understand why.
Hilton KL opened in ... ...booked my stay at the Hilton via Hilton.com. The rate I booked on required an advance purchase and for the Feb stay I had to pay up in November. Not bad and at least I had taken the financial hit before my holiday. Rather than have to experience the painful credit card bill on my return.
Booking was easy and I received a helpful reminder a few days before my arrival to ensure I had all the details needed for check in.

If you have read my Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur review you may question why I would even contemplate staying at a different property. The answer to this would be price.
Hilton KL opened in 2004 and established itself as a major player in the KL hotel market and was soon crowned the accolade of Hilton’s flagship Asian property. When you visit it is easy to understand why! The hotel is always in the top three of hotels in KL on trip advisor and it is always extremely busy. Come read with me to find out more about this stunning example of how a hotel should be designed, built and run.
Booking
I booked my stay at the Hilton via Hilton.com. The rate I booked on required an advance purchase and for the Feb stay I had to pay up in November. Not bad and at least I had taken the financial hit before my holiday. Rather than have to experience the painful credit card bill on my return.Booking was easy and I received a helpful reminder a few days before my arrival to ensure I had all the details needed for check in.
Arrival
After clearing check in at KLIA I made my way to the KLIA express rail link. Rather than take a limousine transfer I had chosen to use the rail link due to the speed and convenience for the hotel.
The hotel is located at KL Sentral station, the main train hub for Kuala Lumpur. As such it was far easier to take the train directly to the hotel than wait around in the traffic, and much cheaper too! The trip to the city and back on the rail link is only £10 return. Cheaper than a limo transfer!
Once I arrived at KL Sentral with my luggage a young lady clutching a Hilton sign greeted me in the arrivals hall. She then arranged for the hotel minibus to take me up to the Hotel. At 8am I would have liked this to be rapid but I had to wait ten minutes for the minibus. Not the best welcome in the KL heat when you have just got off a 13 hour flight but soon enough the minibus showed up and took me up to the hotel.
Check In
After the obligatory greeting at the main door, the bell boy took my luggage away to be sent to my room later. I approached the main reception desk where I was advised that I would be checked in personally by the hotel front office manager. I found this a bit strange at first but it soon transpired that Ms Belinda had previously been the manager at Mandarin Oriental and had remembered me from my many stays there and wanted to greet me personally. It was nice to catch up and I was escorted to my suite on the 34th floor. On the way I was advised that due to low occupancy I had been granted an upgrade to a Lifestyle suite. I was aware of the standard of the rooms in this property but completely unaware of what lay in wait for me..
Once Ms Belinda had greeted me into the Suite and I had gotten over the shock of what I was greeted by, more to follow later, we completed the forms and credit card details.
She then escorted me to the executive lounge on the 33rd floor to talk through with me the many benefits to be had and to catch up. After a few drinks I was left to return to my room.
The Room
Hilton Kuala Lumpur is one of the city’s largest hotels and is a full service hotel catering for every need for the leisure or business traveler.
They have a number of different room categories from standard, executive and suite.
Executive and Suite rooms also have access to the executive lounge, which I shall elaborate on more later. All rooms either overlook the city on one side or the lake gardens on the other. Either way you can be sure of a stunning view.
My room had views out over the lake gardens, giving a brilliant aspect.
Now back to my suite…..
It is possibly the most opulent and extravagant suite I have ever had the pleasure of staying in. It was enormous!
When you first entered you were greeted by a main lounge area, the size of two normal bedrooms! This was kitted out with sofa’s dining table, plasma TV and DVD player and a writing desk with broadband connection. There were also two huge windows giving views out over the lake gardens and a beverage area. There was also a small cloakroom for any visitors to use.
After opening the huge wood paneled doors I was greeted by the master bedroom. A huge king size bed with another plasma TV and DVD player with a walk in wardrobe behind the room. Off the side was also the main bathroom area.
The room was insane and I could not believe what I had got for my £110 a night. It was crazy!
The bathroom was crafted from the finest marble and had an amazing window overlooking the lake gardens for you to while away the time from deep within the tub!
There was also a separate shower cubicle and separate WC. The toilet seat was even heated and had electronic controls to ‘clean’ yourself without the use of toilet paper in true Asian style. Suffice to say that in itself was an experience!
The bathroom contained the finest Crabtree and Evelyn toiletries and the towels and fabrics were of an extremely high standard.
Sleeping was an absolute dream and again I did not want to get up of a morning!
The room was of a fantastic modern contemporary style and was very different to the other Asian hotels in the city which tend to style themselves more traditionally.
The final great thing about any of the rooms in Hilton KL is the ‘Magic’ button found on your telephone. The ‘Magic’ team will aim to deliver your requirements, be it a restaurant booking, DVD rental or even the supply of any items for your room such as a PS2 and games, espresso machine and for those heavily into feng shui, a selection of goldfish in bowls to grace your room. The ‘Magic’ concept is great and really works and is certainly a unique selling point for this property, it is a shame it has not been seen in other Hilton’s around the world!
Executive Lounge
Now as I discussed in my MO KL review, a large part of any major hotel chain is now the provision of an Club Level or Executive Level where guests in these rooms are extended a variety of privileges. Those at Hilton KL included,
Access to the executive lounge where complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea and evening cocktails and canapé’s would be served.
Full soft drinks service all day.
Complimentary access to wireless internet and pc terminals and the ‘Sentral Connection’ boardroom should you wish to book this
A wide selection of the latest magazines, international newspapers and books.
Three pieces of complimentary laundry/pressing/dry cleaning every day.
The executive level on average in Hilton KL is around an extra £30 a night compared to the standard rooms and in my opinion is worth every penny. Like the MO, staff want to get to know you and it is clear that the other hotels in KL are learning from the service you receive at MO. Staff would remember my name and my interests, drinks choices and would always come and talk about my day etc. When traveling alone it can be nice to have this level of interaction. For those who like peace and quiet the staff will also respect this but they are so warm and endearing why would you not want to!
Restaurant/Bar
The hotel has a staggering ten outlets, including seven restaurants, one café, one bar and one night club. There has to be something for everyone here, even if there isn’t you can access the adjoining Le Meridien hotel next door and dine at any of their restaurants and charge back to your room in the Hilton, a neat touch don’t you think?Chyna is the signature Cantonese restaurant of the hotel. It has been designed to represent a traditional Cantonese restaurant and is a rich dining experience. The food is fantastic as are the theatrics from the ‘tea pourers’ never before have you seen a tea pot with a 2 metre long spout! Watch your eyes people!. The service is of a high standard and you will no be disappointed. It also remarkably good value for money!
Senses Restaurant is an Australian styled restaurant that has won many awards. A lot of the produce is flown in from Australia to help retain it’s authenticity. I have not dined here but the reports are excellent!
Iketeru is the hotel’s Japanese offering. The food is traditional Japanese and they serve excellent Sushi. A popular choice for many and booking is essential. Worth making the choice!
Cosmo Lobby Lounge offers a very open plan bar experience for either afternoon tea or drinks in the evening. An extremely busy, but still relaxing place to enjoy a drink and listen to the pianist of an evening.
The Noodle Room is just that. A great place for noodle lovers where the choice is extensive. Serving more traditional Asian dishes with a traditional hawker stall environment. A great place for a quick snack!
Vintage Bank is the winery of the hotel, providing an extensive selection of wine’s and cigars to choose from. Great for any wine lover and one of the largest selections in KL!
Sudu Restaurant is the obligatory international buffet restaurant that also serves breakfast of a morning. I have yet to eat here so cannot comment but the selection looks very impressive!
Caffe Cino provides a starbucks esque lobby café, Simple but effective with a great selection of freshly made pastries that are also supplied to the executive lounge!
Boardwalk provides an al fresco dining experience next to the pool. Typical Western food and Asian dishes are available in a pleasant garden experience with views over the lake gardens.
Finally there is Zeta Bar the hotel’s own nightclub. Open every evening it is a major player on the KL clubbing scene and attracts live entertainment. Table’s can be booked in advance and they do have great drinks promotions. If you are feeling too tired to venture down you can pick up the entertainment in your own room as the bar has it’s own TV channel showcasing the live performances!
Facilities
The hotel can cater for conferences, banquets and events and has a selection of rooms of which can be used to host these events including the second largest ballroom in Kuala Lumpur. Being part of the Hilton chain could mean there is a significant interest placed on business users however as a leisure traveler you will never feel that you are stuck in conference hell whilst you try to relax!
The gym is huge and has all the equipment you would expect. It also has external memberships so is busy throughout the day but there is enough equipment for all to use.
The hotel is also home to it’s own Spa which provided all the treatments you could expect. I have never experienced this so cannot comment but it looked busy enough!
The hotel has the largest freeform pool in Kuala Lumpur, which stretches the length of both the Hilton and Le Meridien hotel combined. There is plenty of space and it never feels crowded. If you have kids or for the big kid within there is a water slide to relive your youth! Food and beverages can also be ordered from your sun lounger and towels and iced water is handed out on arrival.
Inside there is also a steam room, sauna and Jacuzzi and plunge pool. There is also a room to just chill out in between treatments should you wish whilst watching TV or reading a book!
Finally there is a small gift shop that stocks all the essentials a traveler may need.
There is also a large car park available and the valet parking. Expect to pay £1 per visit to the car park.
Breakfast
I took breakfast every day in the executive lounge, which was available between 6am and 10:30. A wide selection of food and drink was on offer with a chef on hand to knock up some eggs or pancakes. There is plenty of choice for both the western and eastern palate. One thing for sure is that you wouldn’t be going hungry any time soon!
Check out
After a week of luxury in my Suite is was time to fly on to Langkawi. Jenny and Louisa bid me farewell from the executive lounge and wished me well, having become two of my good friends for when I return to KL. I settled the bill and took the express train back to the airport. KL 2009 had come to a close. Hilton had stolen my heart. Next time I return I will have a dilemma!
Summary
Without a doubt Hilton KL has to be the best Hilton I have ever stayed in and I doubt any other Hilton could actually come close to deliver the same experience. It is an architectural masterpiece and provides a different kind of service to any other KL property. The ‘Magic’ button is easily one of the best features I have come across in a hotel and I hope to see more of this.
The service again is exemplary and it is clear that the former members of staff from the MO have brought some of the service ethos to Hilton and it is slowly starting to come through.
If you are looking for a hotel that is extremely competitive and price is an issue for you then I would consider the Hilton KL. You will be hard pressed to find another hotel in the city that can provide such a high level experience at such a competitive price.
If money is no object then do look at Mandarin Oriental. It still tops the Hilton but only just!
Advantages: Stunning rooms and quirky features Disadvantages: I don't live there but I wish I did
...spent one night at the Hilton in Kuala Lumpur in December 2004 but one night was enough to make me want to sell my house and all my possessions and go and live at this fantastic hotel. One night was enough for Hilton's Asia-region 'flagship' hotel to burn itself into my mind when many other hotels had long been pushed aside in my goldfish-like memory and replaced with thoughts of what I want for dinner and whether I remembered to feed the cats.
... ...London airport. However, because the Hilton is located directly on top of the Sentral Station (that's how they spell it, it's not a typo), you can get to or from the airport in just 28 minutes. Clearly that's better than your average British Rail service.
In ten minutes using the same train service you can get to KLCC - a popular city centre shopping arcade which is next door to the Petronas Towers and a couple of minutes from the fantastic aquarium ...

Advantages: Good rail connections, good for the Excel or London City Airport, but not too remote for the city Disadvantages: It's expensive but by London terms, you get a lot for your money.
It's hard to go wrong with a Hilton. The chain seems to stand for a solid dependability that's very comforting and reassuring (except for Paris Hilton, she's a different matter entirely). But there's a different side to Hilton in the new Millenium; a funkier and more cutting edge design-led style that's quite unlike their 1980s and 1990s image. I've been staying in Hiltons for about 20 years and I rarely regret it but there's a clear difference between their 'revamped' older hotels and their made-to-measure newbies. When you find a Hilton where everything is as it was designed to be and not where they've modified something older and tried to 'funk it up' a bit you can really tell the difference. The perfect example of this (if you can't be bothered to go to KualaLumpur to their Asian flagship hotel which is a stunning experience) is to ...
Advantages: Great value for money. Luxury property with European style. Something different for KL Disadvantages: Not as contemporary as Hilton but all down to personal preference.
a party or two!
The hotel itself does not have it?s own gymnasium, but instead it shares this with it?s sister the Hilton hotel next door. Le Meridien guests can walk through to the Hilton and enjoy their full gym facilities, spa and Jacuzzi, steam room etc, which are all extremely impressive.
.
Guests can enjoy the largest freeform pool in KualaLumpur that again is shared with the Hilton. The pool stretches the entire width of the property and allows for plenty of room for relaxation. There are plenty of sun loungers around the pool and servers are on hand with towels and iced water to keep you hydrated.
Guests can also visit the flower shop that is situated on the ground floor where some of KL?s best floristry can be found. A way to surprise your loved one should you wish!
All Le Meridien guests can also visit the restaurants, bars ...
Advantages: Great conference venue Disadvantages: There's not a lot in the area if you don't like golf
the bathroom - something I've seen before at the Hilton in KualaLumpur. This means - somewhat bizarrely - that if you wanted to lie in the bath and watch the TV (which is in the main part of the room - you can do that. And the sound is even piped into the bathroom for you. If you are of a more modest disposition don't worry - there are curtains that can be drawn around the glass walls. The toilet, bidet and shower are behind a separate frosted glass door - leaving the sink and bath area free so if there were two of you in the room, you'd have enough privacy for one person to take a shower (a really powerful one of course) whilst the other used the sink. And talking of sinks, it's one of those retro porcelain sinks that stands on a marble topped wash stand.
The marble used throughout the hotel is stunning. Sensibly they've stuck with stone ...
