I might be getting back to Ciao sometime soon as I am quitting my job the last day of August and starting school in September, and now 2 sons to occupy my Ciao time instead of just one.

I had just arrived in England from a full day of traveling. My fiance met me in the arrival terminal and she could tell that I was dead tired and needed some sleep. So instead of making the short trip to the Totting Bec area we decided that it would be nice to spend a quiet afternoon and night at the Hilton. I have previously stayed in the Hilton in Bahrain and found it very pleasant. Well that is where the good part of the story ends.
We arrive to the front desk. Of all the times that I have stayed at a Hilton Hotel I have found that the bell boys would be there to greet you and basically snatch your luggage out of your hand as you are checking in. Well not this time. The only bell boys ( I suppose they were bell boys) that we seen were sitting down on the
job chatting with each other. As we made our way up to the front desk we were rudely greeted as if we were the lowest rate people they had seen all day. Ofcourse I did not look the best just coming off the long flight and I was dressed for comfort more than looks, but I know millionaires that dress in the most ragged clothes that they can find so they should not greet us in such a way. After the rude greeting the desk clerk had us wait while they went and tended to something else behind closed doors. After waiting for about 10 minutes they returned and offered no apology at all for the long wait. It was like we were honored to be in their presence. As tired as I was I did not want to make any comments at the time I just wanted to get into one of the comfortable beds that I had come to know from the Hilton Hotel chain. Finally we were told our room number and how to get there. Still the bell boys were sitting on the couch doing nothing at all, and we were left to drag all our bags up to the room ourself.
Once in our room at the first thing I noticed was that our non-smoking room had recently been smoked in. I called the front desk and they again did not apologize and did not offer us to swap rooms, hey why not they already had our money. Before jumping in the bed I really needed a shower. This was probably the best part of the stay. The shower was nice and HOT just how I like it, and had plenty of water pressure. The towels were nice and soft as I dried myself off. The lighting was just right not to bright on the eyes and positioned just right for the optimal sight when using the mirror. But as I came out of the shower the STENCH of the freshly smoked cigarette was stronger than ever. As it was winter we had to turn on the heat which increased the smell of smoke in the room. Deciding that it was best just to get some sleep and then get out before the smokey smell made me start gagging, I layed down in the bed expecting that nice soft sinking feeling that you get at even the most average hotel, but it was just not to be felt. I plopped down on what felt like pure stones. The bed was nothing less than ROCK HARD. Rock hard can be good but not in this instance. I needed it to be soft and comforting to relax me from the flight. Well instead of calling back down to the front desk my fiance and I tried to fall asleep, even as tired as I was I had problems fall asleep in this bed. It has to be the worst bed I have ever slept in, and let me tell you I have slept in some dives. Finally morning came around nothing too soon either. I had maybe found about 4 hours of sleep out of the 12 or so hours that we were there, which averaged out to be about 35 pounds per hour of sleep. Yap your math is right it was about 150 pounds that night. YES, I did take my opprotunity to fill out their custumor service survey and send it off. I did not dare leave it with the reception knowing that it would never make it farther than the closestrubbish bin.
Now that you know how the service and rooms at the Gatwick Hilton are, I will give you some of the nicer sides of the hotel. If you need to be close to the airport for an early morning departure and you dont mind extremely high rates for less than average rooms this is the perfect place. They do have a nice bar cafe with a nice atmosphere, although it too is high priced and low quality. I did not get a chance to check out the 2nd resteraunt that is on the bottom floor due to the fact its hours were a bit odd for me at the time. The hotel lobby itself was very nice and clean it gave the perfect first impression if only that mattered after meeting the desk clerks though.
My advise to you and all that you know, STAY AWAY FROM THE GATWICK HILTON, unless you just absolutely have to stay there. If you do stay I wish you the best of luck to have a better experience than I did. I know it is not a reflection of the whole chain but it sure leaves a bad first impression of London. Luckily I have found many other things here in London/Cambridge that have made up for the stay there.

Excellent review, thanks for the warning. Did you forget to fill in the questions at the bottom?

I think a lot of airport hotels can be quite unhelpful and unpleasant, they are always full so they don't have to bother. Would be good to know some of the other facilities this place offered. By the way I think this op should be under Gatwick Hilton, for that particular hotel, but has appeared under "Hilton" in general... other Hiltons are much nicer (like the one in Bahrain!) :)
