Last year in the Sunday supplements I read about the new Hilton Hotel that had just opened in Venice and they had comments on the wonderful views and the roof terrace.
As we had booked to visit Venice in March of this year, and had been several times before this was an opportunity to see another view of Venice from a different area.

I had read that it is a large hotel and thinking about Venice and the size it must be out of the main Venice tourist area, we had not seen any building work on that scale the year before.

The Hilton hotel is in the Giudecca area of Venice away from St. Mark's Square. We had to catch a water bus from San Zaccaria, over to Zitelle and then just wondered along until we arrived at the Hilton which is the other end of Giudecca Island.

They do say that Elton John has a house in this part of Venice.

The hotel is an imposing building which was built in the 19th century and is known as Mulion Stuky (on the maps of Venice) it's previous use was a flour mill, though after years of staying empty and fires it has been transformed into one of the best hotels in the world.

I must say we were not impressed with the doors into the hotel, somewhat like any other door, but 3 single doors in total set in the brickwork to the bottom left hand corner of the building. I was expecting something in glass perhaps Murano glass and gold/brass shinny and twirling round. These are plain glass set in a brown metal frame that you push…..not impressive.

The lobby is big, with a wonderful table and it had a vase full of sweet scented Night Stocks which smelt divine and looked great.

As we were not staying in the hotel, Oh! We had no idea as to where we needed to be. We wandered unchallenged around looking for something to say which of the 4 lifts we needed to get to the roof /sky terrace. We opted for lift 3 in the entrance as 4 had a cross above it so we thought best not use that one. The 4 of us went up to the 6th floor where we got out, this was the executive suites, no roof/sky terrace so we came back down. Back in the entrance with lots and lots of people looking like clothes horses for the latest in fashion design, we decided to ask the bell hop where we wanted to be. He was very polite and explained that we had to walk the full length of the hotel to the set of lifts at the back and then go to the 8th floor. Our walk to the back of the hotel was like walking through a shopping centre. We could have ordered a made to measure shirt, brought jewellery, pictures or works of art, all manned by staff that again would not look out of place in a fashion magazine.

We found the lifts and went up to the 8th floor, this floor also has a dining room that opens for lunch around 12 but as we where early we didn't stay.

The view out on the terrace is great, and unspoilt by any other building, but be aware you cannot see into St.Mark's square from here. You do get a great view of the prison island over the back away from Venice itself, and a view of the large cruise ships in the port. The main view from the top front of the hotel though is of the buildings along the Dorsoduro, or the backbone of Venice.

There are large rattan settees and chairs, sunloungers and a swimming pool, as it was March and not the warmest of days no one was in the pool although there where people sat outside reading the papers and having a drink.

We looked around, looked at the views and came back down.

The hotel has its own launches that will transfer you from the hotel over to St. Mark's stop or any of the other stops that you would wish to be taken to.

Although we did not stay at the hotel or eat there so cannot comment on that side of things, for us we all agreed if staying in Venice then we would always choose our hotel just off St. Mark's square. I dare say it would be nice to stay at the Hilton, but it was not for us, but don't let us put you off paying £275-00 to £1,000 plus per room per night.

The view's are great if you are not asleep.

Great review, I think you got the important message across, that is how can such Monied people who have greater choice than the rest of us choose such a place over the Charm of staying where it is at in Venice. Ciao Steve.

Shame you couldn't tell us what the rooms were like! - bit difficult though considering you didn't stay here.

Entertaining and well written but I thnik you need to stay in a hotel to be able to write a proper review of it.
