Advantages: youthful, insightful, lite'n'easy, fresh Disadvantages: I would like to know more of what Holden could have to say!
J.D.Salinger - The Catcher In The Rye
It's been ages I had wanted to lay my hands on this book, as everybody talked about it as of a cult piece and a phaenomena. I was bit surprised by how thin the little book was, but it gave me a good vibe in the bookstore, so I've got it.
The main character
The story is narrated by this teenager going under the name of Holden Caulfield, an ungraspable creature who doesn't like to subdue to the rules of schools his parents send him to, so he ends up being kicked and kicked yet again. He's not headless, but he was a way of his own for everything and that way doesn't correspond with the rules. He also changes his mind pretty often, even on kinda important matters, but he doesn't seem to be worried by the consequences of his deeds. He's a moody fella, when he sets his head for sth, he will just do ...
out he has failed out of school.
Holden attempts to sneak in his house and visit Phoebe, but he is only greeted with her utter disappointment when she finds out he failed, leaving him feel betrayed.
Holden decides to create a new identity and pretend to be a deaf/mute person who does not need to communicate with the outside world. His attempts fail, so he decides to change his mind and rejoins his family.
Some time later, he enters into an institution where he tells his amazing story of adolescence, alienation, and failure.
The Catcher In The Rye is a fiction novel written by J.D. Salinger, and was published first on July 16th,1951. It contains profanity and enactment of sexuality and teenage angst. ...
Advantages: great piece of literature Disadvantages: -
i absolutely fell in love with this book. if you have a 16 year old kid, make them read this book. it has so many memorable quotes and the main character has such a grippingly profound mind and that made the book a page turner for me. i loved this book, however, not everyone is a fan. if you can relate in any way to the main character of The Catcher In The Rye then you will not be able to let the book go. this was my favorite quote in the book; "the mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one"
you will either love this book or hate it ...
