The answer:- sharm El sheikh....more accurately Hilton sharks Bay
Having stayed at the Taba hilton (the one that got bombed) before, and the Nuweiba Hilton (we were there the night the Taba got bombed....too close for comfort...but security in Egypt is taken seriously, and in fairness you are just as likely to get bombed on the tube these days..so don;t let it worry you) , this is as good as any Hilton in the UK, (as are the others we stayed at before. (they even have the same cups, cutlery, and bed-spreads!
The food was excellent - wide selection of international dishes, which rotates on a weekly basis; freshest of salads;breads;cheeses, every dish as long as it didn't include Pork. but plenty of good beef, chicken and vegetable favourites, piled high with grains, rice, potatoes, etc.
All drinks (international soft drink brands) included; and a local beer called "Sakara Gold"; which appears to be brewed by interbrew, and was a very refreshing lager.
If you want to learn to dive, the Sinai Dive school there are excellent, very friendly, very informed, very relaxed too for the uninitiated. But you really don;t need to dive to experience the best the reef had to offer.
a drop off jetty straddles the shoreline coral reef. our fish species sightings went into 3 figures with the highlights being a 12 foot moray eel; 4 different sized Napolean Wrasses (if you don;t know what they are, look them up on google..they are MASSIVE!!!..biggest we swam with about 1200Lb), a lovely pair of blue-spotted stingrays, and more parrot fish that you could shake a reef sea fish guide at.
apart from the pools there's not much for kids to do...which is good...cos you can have a wonderfully relaxing couples holiday, and the midday sun is extremely powerful....(don't forget your flipflops, you can burn your feet walking aroud the tiled floors!!)
WARNINGS:-
We have two:-
1)If you go out on the "Lazy Day Boat snorkelling trip" to Tiran Island....make sure you are a VERY good swimmer, and can use flippers properly, as we were taken out on a windy day, with a big tidal swell, and 4 of us nearly drowned!...."lazy" it is not....and you get much more pleasure off the inshore reef than any boat trip can show you.
2)Be careful which bar you drink at....they both use plastic cups, most of the cracked and scratched; washed by hand, dipped in the ice bucket by hand...you can see where this is going....there is a rife little tummy bug that everyone seems to get....we tried food minus the bar drinks..and were fine....so drink bottles of water, or beer, and don;t get ice!
