We have just returned from our holiday in Andalucia, and we booked our car through Autos Abroad, after doing some research and finding them the cheapest around at the time. Even more so when I found an advert in my paper offering different discounts for different airlines. As we were travelling with Easyjet we would receive a £12 discount if we booked a car from them on the phone. The advert in the paper took up a whole page and as it was black writing on a yellow background it stood out well. There were three offers stating differing levels of discounts depepnding on the airline you were flying with. The reservations telephone number and a number to quote upon ringing was clearly stated. There was a date upon which the offer finished. The address and website was also advertised.
I rang one Sunday afternoon, and quoted
the relevant number, giving all the details that they required. The assistant while sort of trying to help got a bit flustered when I explained that I wanted the car delivered to the hotel we would be staying in for the night that we arrived at Malaga. She took all the details down including the address of the hotel. Then she explained that she didn't know how to do it on the computer so would book it up then ask someone later, saying we would probably have to pay extra to have the car delivered.
I have to say I was a bit concerned about what if anything we would actually get once in Malaga. We duly received all the details, the hotel address being on them and correct. A voucher was to follow which we would need to hand to the local hire company.
On the morning of delivery at around 9 am we were discussing telephoning the company to arrange delivery as stated on the form, when the phone in our room rang. The local company Crown Rent a car had arrived with our car. Impressed my husband went down to sort out the details. He was gone some time but that was due to the car having to be parked some way from the hotel because of road works. The agent drove David to the car and back again, and would have driven us both and luggage back to the car but we weren't quite ready to go.
We had gone for the cheapest car they had and with the discount it cost us £78 for 8 days. But they had given us an ugrade, so instead of a 3 door without aircon we got a 5 door with aircon in fact a bigger car. It was a Fiat Punto, and it was only about 6 months old and in good condition. We didn't even have to pay any extra to have it delivered, as I had been told on the phone.
We had a lovely holiday the car worked hard for us going up and down steep hills and twisty windy corners. It had been delivered with a full tank of petrol, which we had to replace upon taking it back to their office at the airport. No problem as there is a petrol station right ouitside Malaga Airport. When we took it back all they did was make sure we had all our possessions checked there was no big damage to it, and that was it.
We have used this company before and we have crashed the car on a number of occasions. They have always been polite helpful and friendly, all we've had to pay was the £70 excess which was agreed beforehand.
All in all both my husband and I were very impressed with the level of service we received. The manner of the assistant on the phone locally being the only critisism.
I have to edit this opinion now and say to anyone reading this first account to disregard it, as we have just used them again and had absolutely awful treatment.
I booked and paid a car from them via the telephone to be delivered to our hotel in Malaga on 15th April 2003. We were staying there for one night before our onward journey to Frigiliana the next. I had no hesitation in using them again as the service had been so good before.
We wanted the car delivered at 9.30 am. This time arrived and went 10.30 still nothing. So my husband called the number we had on our paper work spending at least half an hour being kept on hold and transferred to different people, finally to be told we were not getting any car from them, but they wouldn't tell us why. We phoned the English end to be told it was true we would get no car because the two companies were in dispute with one another. We rang Crown (the local company) again who eventually told us that Autos Abroad had not paid them a penny of any car hire and that was why we would get no car.
On further checking the paperwork the Company now seems to be called HIRE FOR LOWER AT 14 ARCHER STREET SOHO LONDON W1 7BD. We paid £131 for nothing, and were left stranded in Malaga until the hotel took pity on us and found us another car which cost us a further £300.
To date we have sent 2 recorded delivery letters to them with obviously no reply. Small claims court next I guess.
Anyone thinking of using this company in future one word DON'T.
