Hiroshima is a great city to spend a few summer days. It has a more comfortable climate than other Japanese cities, which can get stiflingly humid during summer, and great food - you must try Hiroshimayaki - a kind of pancake with egg, noodles and a choice of meat and vegetables, which the cook slaps in front of you to eat directly off a steaming hot-plate.
Of course, Hiroshima is famous for 6th August 1945 when the atom bomb was dropped, levelling the city in seconds. Anyone visiting Hiroshima should pay a visit to the intensely moving Memorial Museum and Peace Dome.
Other attractions, less famous but eaqually worthy of a visit ,include Hiroshima Castle, rebuilt after the bomb blast and situated high on a hill, surrounded by attractive gardens. Be sure to bring plenty of mosquito repellent during summer, as Japanese mossies are vicious!
Further afield is Miyajima island, which is home to a floating torii or shrine gate, as well as cheeky deer who will snatch any thing remotely edible right out of your hands. You can also swim in the sea here, although its murky grey colour isn't particularly appealing.
Hiroshima is less cosmopolitan than other cities such as Osaka and Tokyo, however you can spend many hours shopping in its Mitsukoshi and Maruei department stores. There is also a mall where it is possible to buy cheap clothes and souvenirs.
I would recommend Hiroshima as a refreshing getaway, where mountains and trees are almost always visible and where the concrete doesn't threaten to submerge you as in Tokyo.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
A generally fair review, although there are quite a few factual errors. Hiroshima Castle, for example, is nowhere near a hill, and there's no Maruei Department Store.
The review was correct in stressing Hiroshima's friendliness, though.
