... Hobart won't disappoint - it has all the major chains seen in other Aussie cities such as Myer (although a very small one!), Sportsgirl and well known book stores. From our hotel the shops were easily accessible and within walking distance.

staying in Hobart. Situated just 8 minutes away from the centre of Hobart, you are perfectly located whatever your needs. Always an important part of my holiday - restaurants are plentiful! Our breakfast was taken at Kafe Kara which was five minutes walk down the hill from our hotel. This is one of Hobart's famous markets which is every Saturday from 8.30am to 3pm. A brilliant atmosphere, music, food and shopping all in a short space! We got there early and enjoyed an omelette in a roll for a paltry 4 bucks (£1.60). Stroll around and pick up a bargain or three. There's ...

Advantages: Chocolate factory, Mt Wellington, Harbour, Salamanca Market Disadvantages: It gets spookily quiet at night
...in my decision to go. Hobart is the Brummie bit of Australia in so far as it's a city with few redeeming features beyond a Cadbury's factory hidden in its suburbs. However that's where the similarities end. Nestled between the Derwent River and the imposing Mount Wellington, Hobart very much resembles a colourful Alpine village surrounded by rolling green hills with huddles of Terracotta houses adorned with rooves of teal and charcoal and lime.
... ...tables occupied. In Hobart attractions are limited. You can climb Mount Wellington for fantastic views of the city and beyond, but it's a 4 hour upward trek so I opted for the much more refined coach trip up to the summit. For $16 you get a 2 hour round trip with live commentary and plenty of photo opportunities. It's well worth doing if you're wrapped up warmly and steady on your feet as the severe winds at the top threaten to blow you over with ...

Advantages: close to city centre, beautiful little historic town, great views Disadvantages: the prestigious suburb of Hobart so it is quite expensive to stay and eat there
...Battery point is the most historic suburb of Hobart, Australia’s second oldest city. Hobart is the capital of Tasmania, the only island state of Australia and separated from the mainland by the Bass strait.
**Getting there**
For visa requirements for Australia see my general review of Australia. If you are already in Australia, domestic flights into Hobart are available with Qantas, Virginblue, Jetstar or Rex airlines. Otherwise you could get an overnight boat from Melbourne to the north of Tasmania and then drive down to Hobart which is in South West Tasmania and would take about three and a half hours. The airport is about a 15 minute drive to the city centre. Battery Point is only a short walk from the centre, taking around 10 minutes from Salamanca Place and Constitution Dock, the dock famous for being the end of the annual...

...as England. Some 'don't miss' sights include Wineglass Bay (only accessible by an hour's hike but definately worth it), Cradle Mountain (short walks and luxury accomodation for those who desire it or long walks - including the famous Overland Track and rugged mountain huts for the more hardy), Salamanca Market on Saturdays in Hobart - one of Australia's largest open air markets as as much loved by the locals as the tourists, and any of the many wildlife parks where you can feed free-roaming kangaroos and wallabies, cuddle koalas and see the real Tasmanian Devils (look but don't touch these guys!)....
