We arrived at the Holgate Bridge Hotel early afternoon. It looked basic but adequate and very out dated. We didn't mind this though - 3 star hotel and all - and we are not over picky.
When we went to reception the lady behind the desk seemed very bored with her job and wasn't pretending to be very welcoming. Still, not all that important really.
We were pointed to our room down the hall.
As soon as we went in the room spelled like drains...or, to be honest - poo. It was room number 3 in the hotel. We explored the bathroom and I found something on the toilet seat which i wiped off straight away so we could settle and use the facilities. Perhaps this is where I should have complained but didn't, and I was in holiday mood so it didn't occur to me.
The room is dated and depressing, the only window was internal and opened onto the hallway - which was also part of the dining area. So no concept of day or night and no way of ventilating the smelly room.
When we got the holiday underway, we quickly realised the shower wasn't draining away properly. Which may have accounted for the smell. As if this wasn’t enough though - there was a lot of black mould on the shower hose which gathered round your feet in the deep pool that wasn't draining away. Showering not a very nice experience at all. The sink taps also gave out scale when we used them, from the base of the tap.
I got bites on my ankles and legs which I am convinced are from insects in the thick old carpet in the room - but there is no way of being sure of this.
The bed had no duvet - just a sheet and two woolly blankets - needs updating. The kettle was ancient and we got 3 teabags in a very old plastic tub. Towels and sheet seemed clean but wet towels were not replaced.
When we left I complained to a lady who may have owned the place. She said I should have said something earlier, good point. I'm not sure why I accepted what she said - the room was unclean and unpleasant, drains aside. It was my birthday though and I was feeling very disappointed. She charged me full wack and I really don't think she cared a jot about our poor stay - I felt she wanted my money and wanted rid of me. I really don't think she or her staff are all that bothered about customer satisfaction at all. The general attitude is bored and a general feeling as a customer of being a burden, something staff just have to deal with and take little pleasure in doing so.
I really do advise you find another place to stay - and always check online reviews first, this isn't the first poor review for Holgate Bridge and won't be the last - if only I'd known. Live and learn.
