Since 1996 the Cathedral has been a UNESCO World Heritage site and is Germany's most visited attraction - over two million people visit annually.
I am not going to use the word pilgrims or indeed tourists here, everyone I suspect has slightly different and personal reasons for actually stepping over the threshold and entering the colossal space enclosed by Cologne Cathedral.

We went to Cologne this December so I could practice my German, we could go to the Christmas markets and we could take some much needed time off work. Actually, scrap that. Those were the reasons we went to Germany. WHY DID WE BOOK THE HOTEL VIKTORIA - COLOGNE?
It all started earlier in the year upon receiving an unexpected wedding invitation - not in Cologne, but in Lubeck, three hundred miles to the north east. Having decided on taking the car, and to make an autumn break of it, we decided that we would split our German holiday in two: three days in Lubeck and a further three in Cologne.
During the last six years we have driven through Cologne over twenty times on our way to or from Poland, but have never stopped to actually see this magnificent city.
