...My weekends away with the girlies always have to be cheap affairs, so we usually end up staying in some dodgy B&B on Brighton seafront or the back roads of Great Yarmouth, but when I was booking our trip to Newcastle, I stumbled upon the HolidayInn website, and bagged us a right bargain!
The price
We booked on the Internet a standard double room, which slept up to 4 people in 2 double beds. The cost of this room per night was £54.50. Which works out to about £14.00 each per night! Cheaper than most B&B's!
When we arrived at the HolidayInn though, the price of this room was advertised as £155.00 per room per night. We queried this, and were told that our rate was the Internet rate, and as such we saved £100.00 per night!
So please, if any of you ever need to book a HolidayInn, do so on the Internet and save yourself...

Advantages: Great price, comfortable, good food, family friendly Disadvantages: None
...served and well cooked. Wine prices were reasonable, too.
**Arrival**
Check-in as standard is 3pm and check-out 12 noon. The process was quite smooth. I have found it advantageous with this chain and others to print off a copy of my booking confirmation and take it with me.
I had pre-booked breakfast and so I was expected to pay for the room for one night and for breakfast the following morning on arrival. Everything else is on a pay-as-you-go basis.
**What else do they offer you?**
There are meeting rooms available, but that is about it.
**What is nearby?**
The clue is certainly in the name of the hotel: Premier Travel InnNewcastle International Airport tells you what you need to know - it is 500 yards from the arrivals door at the airport.
There is also a Newcastle-upon-TyneMetro station more or less outside...

Advantages: Just the right amount of variety Disadvantages: Hard to navigate (but a laugh when you get lost)
...MetroCentre was, I believe, the first out-of-town shopping centre in the UK and it is, in my opinion, the best.
First of all, unlike Meadowhall or the White Rose, it is set quite a way out from NewcastleuponTyne and so will not drag trade away from it as much as Meadowhall or the White Rose which are set right on the road into thier respective cities.
Also, MetroCentre (owned by Capital Shopping Centres plc) takes quite a pride in the image of the centre and gives it character without trying to pretend that it is something it isn't. Let me explain, As MetroCentre was the first out-of-town shopping centre, it didn't really have much to go on in terms of past experience of others, i.e. they were the experiment, so to speak. I think that they built MetroCentre in terms of the in-town shopping centres α la Arndale and have now...
