On a recent trip to York (pleasure), we were let down by our first choice of hotel (they claimed not to get out internet reservation) and therefore we ended up staying for one night at the 'Holiday Inn Central'.
For a very reasonable city centre hotel price of £60 (excl breakfast) we secured a room at the Holiday Inn and made our way over to find that there was no parking available - we had to leave our car in a nearby multi-storey which didn't prove cheap for over 24 hrs. There was some free parking around the hotel but with a maximum stay of 2 hours between 08:00 and 18:00, you had to time it well to take advantage !
The hotel was clean but fairly basic. Unlike some other 'cheaper' hotels, there was a restaurant and a full english cost us £5.99 per person as they were running a special offer - I believe normal price is nearer £9.
As we were late booking, the only available room was a disabled room. We accepted thinking we'd just get a much bigger room but weren't prepared for the miles of additional plastic we were greeted with. Handles and hoists next to everything which I am sure are a godsend for those wheelchair bound but for us it caused a nuisance. I banged myself multiple times in the bathroom and couldn't hang my coat or dress up in the wardrobe as they dragged on the floor (the wardrobe was lowered to allow access). Oh, and I nearly caused chaos by pulling the emergency cord which dangled over my bedside table !!!
Overall though can't really complain about the room except for the noise ! We weren't next to a main road but you could hear every car and every footstep of those passing by.
Fortunately we were out for a surprise 30th so alcohol helped us sleep and we looked forward to breakfast the next morning to soak up some of the night before. Breakfast was OK - cheap and cheerful self service but plenty of choice if a bit disorganised and short staffed.
As we only stayed for one night, I'm not sure what their policies are around changing towels and bedlinen but the good news was - the beds had duvets rather than those annoying 'tucked in' sheets !
Other point about the Holiday Inn are:
Lots of leaflets for things to do in the surrounding areas available Small shop in reception supplying those essentials such as drinks, toothpaste and paracetamol ! Friendly staff Fast checkout service
Security was also very high - not sure if this is good or bad (ie: does it say something about the area ?) - you needed to swipe your room key to get into the hotel itself and then again to use the lift which caused fun when 3 people wanting three different floors wanted to use the lift at once !
To summarise, the stay wasn't great but it wasn't bad and for £70 incl breakfast for 2, seemed reasonable enough for a city centre hotel (walking distance to the main streets). However, I think in hindsight I would rather pay a little extra for that little extra - if you know what I mean !

BArgain price for that kind of hotel. I guess though that it was just unfortunate that the facilties in the disabled room caused you problems.

The £60.00 was that for one per night or for a couple sharing a room? I think the most |I have ever paid per night for B & B where ever I have been has been £36.00 per night But then I usualy opt for the small guest houses rather than the hotels.... But an interesting read. Lynn-Marie
