Hutongs of Beijing

Advantages: Beautiful buildings and a look at life for many ordinary citizens of Beijing
Disadvantages: Can be busy and cramped

A hutong is an ancient alleyway or lane found in Beijing which can date back as far as the Yuan dynasty of China in the 13th century. The crisscrossing alleys can now offer a glimpse of another part of this ancient city that is quite different to the major attractions such as the Summer Palace or the Forbidden City. The tiny, twisted and interconnected lanes wind through whole areas of the city of Beijing. The lanes are lined with traditional stone houses all arranged in quadrangles, so four houses around a courtyard, which are beautiful old fashioned buildings. They often involve carved pillars, window frames and doors and the open spaces of the courtyard lets in air and light to otherwise quite cramped areas-some of the lanes really are tiny with less than a metre of breadth. County Hall

Advantages: Good price, friendly staff, good location, good meals, quiet
Disadvantages: No wheelchair access at the front

At the beginning of October 2008 I had to travel to Londn to attend a job interview. I wanted a reasonably priced hotel that was close to my interview location and also that offered good access to some of the London tourist attractions. The Premier Inn County Hall Hotel fit the bill and also delivered so much more. I caught a taxi from the train station and the first thing that I noticed when getting there was that the part of Belvedere Road in which the hotel is situated has barriers at either end so only traffic that has a reason for being there is allowed in...this makes the front of the hotel quieter than most places in London. The building also makes a rather striking impression as it is the listed building which used to hold the GLC. The only problem with this is that the entrance to the hotel is up a short flight of stairs ...

National Exhibition Centre

Advantages: A great, well-managed complex
Disadvantages: Food can bit a bit expenive

by cheerful staff. You can eat a snack for a fiver or you can spend £20 plus on a proper restaurant meal with wine. The restaurant food is really very good and I have eaten meals there that would not disgrace many hotels. I think, however, that I should point out that often I am eating at the expense of my boss, so that part of my review should be read with that born in mind! What are the prices of entry to trade shows? Generally, they can set you back a great deal. Would I attend so many shows if I had to pay and didn't rely on my press card to get me in to the shows for free? To be honest, I doubt it very much. Plus there are special facilities for journalists with free food and soft drinks. This sort of makes up for the general low pay in the industry. But I digress. Generally speaking the exhibition halls are kept ...
