There are I feel 2 kinds of history museum. One full of dusty artifacts and the other that tries to take you on a history lesson.
This is the latter.
Most of the exhibits are not valuable, and many are replicas.
But the story of the permanent exhibit is amazing. Starting 4,000,000 years ago it takes you first through the geological make-up of Hong Kong. Then you experience 4 natural Hong-Kong ecosystems.
