There are also many temporary exhibits. These are more of the dusty artifact persuasion, and generally not as interesting.

There are I feel 2 kinds of history museum. One full of dusty artifacts and the other that tries to take you on a history lesson.
This is the latter.
Most of the exhibits are not valuable, and many are replicas.
But the story of the permanent exhibit is amazing. Starting 4,000,000 years ago it takes you first through the geological make-up of Hong Kong. Then you experience 4 natural Hong-Kong ecosystems.
Man is introduced as the yao-people, and we then learn how they were superseded by the dynasties.
Hong Kong changed hands many times during the dynasties and eventually was even evacuated through threat of pirates.
