Most of the things I had read were all fairly negative stating things such as no heating in the rooms, damp patches, dirty bedding etc so to be honest I was a bit reluctant to go!
The hotel: The hotel is set in the countryside with beautiful, peaceful veiws on a fairly quiet country lane. We arrived in the daytime and found the hotel quite easily (without the aid of Satnav!) but a few of my colleagues who arrived later in the evening had said they had found it hard to locate as the road isn't all that well lit.
In most hotels I have been in, the reception desk is usually visible as soon as you enter through the door but for some reason the reception desk was to the right so we sort of stood blocking the door til we realised where it was! I had booked several rooms for our party and had given the names of each person to the hotel so checking in would be a doddle (or so you would think!) but it was sods law that the hotel didn't have a room under my colleagues name - it turns out they had booked 2 rooms under my name so luckily that was sorted easily enough!!!
A lot of my colleagues and myself included are smokers (I know, dirty habit!) but we were quite surprised to find out there wasn't a sheltered area for us to be shunned away to and we were told that the smoking area was the front of the hotel just by the front doors - not really the best of locations in my opinion!
Rooms: Our rooms were based on the second floor so off we went in search of the lift only to find that the hotel no longer has a lift - luckily no-one in our party had any mobility problems (however they do have rooms on the ground floor).
my first impression of the room was 'wow!' - what impressed me most was the window which was at the same angle of the roof and had the pretty countryside veiw. Another thing which I was originally impressed with was the size of the bed - it was huge!! - however, when I dived onto it (as you do!) it turns out it was 2 single beds pushed together and only kept in place by the bedsheets - bad news for those who sleep in the middle of a bed as you will fall down the middle!
The room had everything I needed (or would need/want) - hairdryer, plug sockets, phone, access for internet, tv with radio channels, lots of lighting, box of tissues, towels, trouserpress and tea and coffee facilities with a choice of different flavours/strengths. The décor was very tasteful with cream and reddish colours and had plenty of storage space in the bedroom and plenty of shelf space in the bathroom. The bathroom was also very spacious and had lovely compliment shower gels and soap and also a shower cap which had a hair bobble in which I thought was a nice touch!
The room and bathroom seemed clean (though I am sure the hotel inspector would find something!) however while I was in the bathroom, I went to throw a cotton ball in the bin but missed and it went down the back so I pulled the bin out and that was when I found out it must have been the first time in ages it had been moved! The dirt that was behind it was thick - bleurgh!! I had a bit of a problem with the shower as you have to turn the pressure on full to stop the water coming from the tap but unfortunatly this didn't happen with me and I ended up having a shower and a paddle at the same time!
Food & Drink: Warning - the cost of drinks is very high! The cheapest small glass of wine was about £4.50!! I normally spend that on a bottle from my local Tesco's!! The meal we had was obviously our christmas dinner! Considering they had cooked for about 70 people in one sitting they did a really good job - the meat was nice and moist, the veg was cooked just right and none of it came out cold - the only thing that people seemed to moan about was the roast potatoes which were a little on the underdone side! The following morning, we all had a lovely cooked breakfast which could not be faulted. There was also a choice of cereals, yoghurts, juices and fruits - the only thing I didn't appreciate was being followed around by a waiter as I got some juice and cereal asking if I wanted a cooked breakfast and if I wanted some toast and tea and coffee - I would have prefered to have him wait until I had sat down!
All in all, my stay at the hotel was ok - it was warm, comfy and clean(ish) and fulfilled my needs and the price was quite reasonable (the xmas package of dinner, disco & band, bed and breakfast was £75).
Would I go again? If I was going for a party then yes - if it was just for a night away then no.
