I visited Honolulu Zoo in the summer whilst on Honeymoon in Waikiki.
The Zoo is situated at the far end of Waikiki on the way towards Diamond Head. We happened across the zoo after finding adverts in one of the many brochures and fliers you can pick up from the hotels. The Zoo is within easy walking distance of Waikiki hotels and is worth the visit if you have nothing better planned.
Unfortunately we chose to go around midday on our first day - jet lag hadn't quite hit us yet so we were wide awake and eager to explore Waikiki. It was a scorching hot day and the animals obviously had better things to do than stare at countless faces visiting them in the zoo. Safe to say they were tucked up in the shade having a nap. Still we were there so we headed off around the different areas.

Honolulu Zoo is set into different continents depending on where the animals are from. This makes it easy to navigate if you have a particular wish to see a particular animal. We choose to just amble along following the path whichever way it took us. We spent a good hour and a half at the zoo and that was without much to see. I was looking forward to seeing the Tigers but they were napping in the shade and not coming out to play.

I would recommend the Zoo if you have kids it will keep them occupied and at certain times they feed the elephants ( we missed this!!!) which seems quite entertaining. The zoo is very clean and the animals have plenty of space and freedom to roam. There is food for sale at the zoo, we didn't eat there but did buy some water,( cheaper at the local ABC store) There are toilets dotted around and they could probably do with a few more ( I had drunk a lot of water). At the entrance / exit there is a gift shop, selling all the usual overpriced stuff, large stuffed monkeys etc.
The cost to get into the zoo was $4 each so not too expensive - I'm sure they do deals for family tickets. Best to check out fliers and Oahu weekly for special offers too! If you don't want to walk you can always hop on the trolley bus, but it really is only 5-10 minutes from the middle of Waikiki and the majority of the hotels.

Overall there are much better things to see and do in Waikiki, but if you do have some spare time then it is worth popping along, but check out feeding times etc first!!
